3 in 30 Challenge - September 2011, week 5

I'm counting September as a successful month.  Goal 1 (to find some 'me time') was sort of achieved as I managed this on an average of 4 days every week although I wasn't really using this time to do the sort of things I had hoped to do.  Goal 2 (produce some worksheets) was completed in full.  Goal 3 (decluttering, etc) was mostly succesful as the house is still tidy and the identified tasks were all completed.

So here are my new goals - I'm hoping I do as well in October.

Goal 1 - Personal [1]: I need to sort out a practical routine which ensures that I make best use of my time so that everything I need, or want to do, gets done.

Goal 2 - Personal [2]: I reviewed the current budget last month and now want to put in place short, medium and long term financial plans.

Goal 3 - Home: It's time for some more decluttering.  We are still trying to sort out the extra stuff that we couldn't find room for when we combined our two houses into a joint property.  I have a busy month so I'll be realistic and aim to sort out 5 boxes.

This or That Thursday 2

This is from a series of photos taken yesterday.  There was a mix up at my Wednesday afternoon school; I turned up to teach but they weren't expecting me so I had an unexpected free afternoon.  Luckily the weather was good and I had my camera with me.

Slim Down Sunday 8

Goal: To change my lifestyle and in doing so, lose weight and increase fitness.

Pounds lost: I don't know - I'm not weighing. I've been measuring myself (waist, bust, hips, left upper arm and left thigh) and have so far lost just over 1 inch from every measurement since I started.

How it's gone this week: So so.  I've been sticking to the smaller portions and apart from one day I've cut out all between meal snacks.  My fluid intake has been better: on non-teaching days there is no problem in drinking enough and on teaching days I have done a lot better but haven't managed to reach my target.  Still no exercise!

Plan for this week: Continue with the current plan: plenty of fluids, calories in/out balance and be more active.

Bean meets Wriggle

The Paper Mama

I am linking this photo to the challenge organised by The Paper Mama where the rules state that the photo must be focused around your children.  Well I don't have any children but I do have great-nephews and great-nieces so I'm hoping that counts!

The current theme is 'friends' and I'm linking this photo of Bean meeting his baby cousin, Wriggle, for the very first time. I just love the expression on his face.

The Simple Woman's Daybook - 24 September 2011

FOR TODAY - Saturday, 24th September 2011, 12:18pm

Outside my window... it is sunny. It is supposed to be really hot for the next week.

I am thinking... that beginners' band practice went well this morning.  Luckily they are all doing well at learning to read the music so progress is much faster than with the last intake.

I am thankful... that my family and friends are well, or as well as can be expected in two cases!

I am learning ... still working towards a flute exam and plodding on with learning to play the piano.  Progress is slow!

In the kitchen... I am cooking a fish pie for me and a beef casserole for Ced.

I am wearing... t shirt, skirt and cardigan.

I am creating... nothing, it's still quiet on the creative front.

I am going... to take some photos.  I have a few to do for the scavenger hunt and I want to take some more around the home.

I am wondering... when to buy my new camera.

I am reading... 'Three Weeks To Say Goodbye' by C.J. Box.  I've only read the first three chapters so far but I'm hooked.  I'll try to finish it this weekend.

I am hoping... that I can get my clarinet sorted.  It hasn't really played properly since it was serviced so it is back in the shop for them to rectify the problem.

I am looking forward to... a good rest.  I've been tired all week and can feel the start of a cold threatening so I'm going to have an easy weekend, pottering about at home with the camera, eating, drinking and reading.  Oh, and watching Downton Abbey on Sunday.

I am hearing... the TV and the fan on the cooker.

Around the house... it is still tidy.  I can't believe it!

I am pondering... still working out where I want to be financially this time next year.

One of my favorite things...  the changes of the seasons.  I am so glad that I live in a country where we can experience the different seasons throughout the year.

A few plans for the rest of the week: as last week - family visiting on Tuesday, teaching Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and band practice on Saturday.  I'll watch Dr Who tonight and Downton Abbey tomorrow.

Here is a thought I am sharing ...

3 in 30 Challenge - September 2011 - week 4

It's been a okay sort of week.  I've stuck to the goals but haven't really achieved the results I would have liked.

Goal 1 - Personal: I didn't really achieve my personal goal for August but as I'll still be working on it as part of Slim Down Sunday I'm setting a new personal goal for this challenge. I start teaching again next week and that, put together with caring for Ced, means that I know I will get overtired and end up spending any free time I have resting and/or doing nothing. So, I've decided to allocate myself some quality 'me time' every day, to be used as the mood takes me but to be an activity of some kind - e.g. photography, music, meeting friends, crafting. I'd also like to find the time to do some extra blog posts rather that just the regular meme posts.
Update week 1: I've managed 'me time' 4 days out of 7, but to be honest I just forgot on the other 3 days!
Update week 2: This is going well. I still haven't managed every day and it seems to have settled at 4 days out of 7 again but I am happy with that. Still haven't managed any crafting but did do an extra blog post this week.
Update week 3: This hasn't gone as well as I'd hoped.  I've still managed some 'me time' but only for reading, blogging and watching TV, but not for the sort of activities I'd really like to make time for.

Goal 2 - Professional: to design and produce some new worksheets for the beginners, to cover key signatures and note recognition.
Update week 1: I've made a start and have the draft information sorted.
Update week 2: COMPLETED. The worksheets were issued this week.

Goal 3 - Home: This goal is in part a continuation from last month and involves keeping the decluttered rooms clean and tidy. In addition I want to defrost and refill the freezer, finish sorting and filing our personal papers and also review the budget.
Update week 1: I've defrosted the freezer and started refilling it. The house is still tidy and I've made a start on the filing and reviewing the budget.
Update week 2: Completed the defrosting/refilling the freezer, filing personal papers and reviewing the budget. The decluttered rooms are still tidy.
Update week 3: The decluttered rooms are still tidy - I've now got into the habit of putting away and clearing up as I go along.  I still need to hoover and dust every room properly.

Slim Down Sunday 7

Goal: To change my lifestyle and in doing so, lose weight and increase fitness.

Pounds lost: I don't know - I'm not weighing.  I had a lovely compliment from someone I hadn't seen since the beginning of July who commented on my weight loss.!!!!

How it's gone this week: It's been a reasonable week.  I haven't felt particulary motivated but I also haven't been really bad.  I've managed slightly better with my fluid intake but as usual there is plenty of room for improvement. Mostly sticking to the reduced portion sizes but have strayed a couple of times.

Plan for this week: More of the same really - plenty of fluids, calories in/out balance and be more active.

Project 365 - week 9

057/365: Home-grown tomatoes - a gift from Lisa, grown by her grandad.

058/365: This is the classroom where I teach recorders to the year 3s in my Monday school.

059/365: The ford at Lacock.

060/365: Some very sad looking blackberries, photographed in the layby at Blacklands while waiting to go to my first pupil of the afternoon.

061/365: Great news!  Three of my pupils have been invited to perform in the ABRSM High Scorer's Concert as part of the Calne Music and Arts Festival.  The've all agreed to perform - boy on cornet (grade 1), girl on flute (grade 1) and girl on clarinet (grade 2).
062/365: Started reading 'From the Dead' by Mark Billingham, one of the latest stack of books from my sister.

063/365: Members of the Main Band teaching the Beginners' Band to march!

The Simple Woman's Daybook - 17 September 2011

FOR TODAY - Saturday, 17th September 2011, 12:17pm

Outside my window... it is sunny,  but there are dark clouds heading this way.

I am thinking... that I'm not in a very good mood today, but I don't know why!

I am thankful... that my friend has been accepted to be a foster carer.  She's wanted to do this for years.

I am learning ... to use the photo editing software - it's going to be a long job!

In the kitchen... the freezer and larder are full.

I am wearing... a white t shirt and a red/black/white skirt.

I am creating... nothing, just having a rest on the creative front.

I am going... to complete the paperwork for this week's teaching.

I am wondering... where I put the spare recorder books.  I put them out, ready to take to school and now can't find them ... I'm getting old!!

I am reading... 'From the Dead' by Mark Billingham.  I started it last night and I'm not sure if I'm going to like it.

I am hoping... that my friend's daughters, Bethanie and Kelsey, enjoy their time at University.  Beth is starting her second year and Kelsey is starting her first year, both at the same uni doing the same course.

I am looking forward to... a quiet weekend with Ced.

I am hearing... the washing machine and the TV.

Around the house... it is still tidy but I now need to push on and sort out the conservatory.

I am pondering... where I want to be financially this time next year.

One of my favorite things...  freshly baked bread.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Family visiting on Tuesday, teaching Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and band practice on Saturday.

Ladies Who Lunch in Lacock

I've had a lovely day today.  I met up with my lovely friend, Lyn, in Lacock.  For those of you who don't know it, Lacock is a village in Wiltshire which is owned by the National Trust and is a popular location for films and television, including the Harry Potter series, BBC's Cranford Chronicles and Pride and Prejudice.  I went early to take some photographs but the skies opened on the way there so I sat in the car until Lyn arrived rather than brave the heavy downpour.

a gift of flowers for Lyn

We had lunch at the George Inn, lots to eat so I'm not too hopeful of any weight loss this week! Plenty of time to chat and catch up on everything and of course, as always in Lyn's company, lots of laughter.  Thanks Lyn!  It was just what I needed.

After we'd eaten the weather had miraculously cleared up so we went for a quick walk around the village so that I could take some photos.  They're not particluarly good but I'll post them anyway and make a mental note to do better next time!

Slim Down Sunday 6

Goal: To change my lifestyle and in doing so, lose weight and increase fitness.

Pounds lost: I don't know - I'm not weighing myself but the tape measure still shows a slight reduction in size.

How it's gone this week: It hasn't been a particularly good week.  The main problem is that I haven't been drinking enough through the day when I'm teaching and I haven't yet decided how to solve that little problem.  On non-teaching days I've been reasonably good and I haven't strayed so far that I can't get back on track easily.  Hopefully!!

Plan for this week: Sort out how to get enough fluids on teaching days (having a drink in the classroom isn't always an option and is something I can only do in 1 out of my 5 schools + I teach through playtimes).  Continue to maintain a sensible balance between calories in and calories out.   Try to do some exercise/be more active - this will probably have to be restricted to the non-teaching days as I don't have the free time to take walks on teaching days.

Project 365 - week 8

050/365: I 've defrosted the freezer and started to refill it.  For some reason it still looks very icy in the photo but it's definitely defrosted properly.

051/365: Went shopping for new clothes with Ena (my sister).

052/365: The patient transport arrived to take us to Bristol General Hospital for Ced's appointment in the Respiratory Clinic.

053/365: We watched 'Who Do You Think You Are', about Emilia Fox.

054/365:  Some of the instruments piled in the corner of the music room in my Thursday school.

055/365: The music room in my Friday school.

056/365: Some of the Main Band getting ready to start their practice.

The Simple Woman's Daybook - 10 September 2011

FOR TODAY - Saturday, 10th September 2011, 12:31pm

Outside my window... it is trying to rain.

I am thinking... about how the band practice went this morning.

I am thankful... for the chance to do a job that I love.  It doesn't feel like work!

I am learning ... to relax and not drive myself too hard.

In the kitchen... are the ingredients for tonight's meal - we are having chilli.

I am wearing... t shirt and skirt.  Again!

I am creating... some lists.  To-do lists, sorting out the next stage of the clean-up.

I am going... to write some letters and emails - catch up on how friends and family are getting on.

I am wondering... why so few members of the Junior Band turned up for practice this morning.  Hopefully they just forgot so I'll have to make the effort to remind them when I visit their schools on Monday.

I am reading... 'Broken' by Karin Slaughter.

I am hoping... that next week is as good as this week has been.

I am looking forward to... to spending an evening with friends next week, before two of the daughters leave for university.

I am hearing... the qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.

Around the house... not a lot is happening.  It is still tidy in the rooms I've decluttered.

I am pondering... whether to sign up for Phoenix Trading to sell their greeting cards and other goodies.

One of my favorite things...  music - playing, listening and/or teaching, it doesn't matter which.  I just love music.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Family visiting on Tuesday, friends round for a meal on Thursday, teaching Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Here is a thought I am sharing ...

3 in 30 Challenge - September 2011 - week 2

Here is an update on my September goals.  So far it has been a successful month.

Goal 1 - Personal: I didn't really achieve my personal goal for August but as I'll still be working on it as part of Slim Down Sunday I'm setting a new personal goal for this challenge. Project 365 - week 7

043/365: Some more books to read, passed on by my sister.

044/365: Made a start on sewing the name labels on Tinkerbell and Tweenie's new school uniforms.

045/365: Wriggle (and her mum, Mel) popped in to see us.

046/365: Went to a crafting morning at Teri's house.

047/365: 51 years ago today, Ced started his National Service.

048/365: Problems with the street light again - this is the third lot of workmen who've tried to sort it out.

049/365: Tinkerbell and Tweenie with their medals for completing the library's summer reading challenge - they read 6 books each.

Slim Down Sunday 5

Goal: To change my lifestyle and in doing so, lose weight and increase fitness.

Pounds lost: I don't know - I'm not weighing myself but the tape measure shows a slight reduction in size.

How it's gone this week: I'm still managing to cut down on the snacks between meals and mostly sticking to smaller portions. I don't actually feel as if I've lost any weight this week - I sort of feel bloated and I think that is mainly due to not having enough to drink each day.  I've now defrosted the freezer so am in a good position to refill with sensible choices.

Plan for this week: Continue to maintain a sensible balance between calories in and calories out and get more exercise/be more active.  I return to work this week so it'll be interesting to see how the changes affect my good intentions!  Oh, and make sure I drink enough every day.

The Simple Woman's Daybook - 3 September 2011

FOR TODAY - Saturday, 3rd September 2011, 14:46pm

Outside my window... is a very dull, grey day.

I am thinking... that I need to get a move on.  I have to finish sewing the name labels on Tinkerbell and Tweenie's new school uniforms.

I am thankful... for my new online friends.  This blog, and the friends I have made through it, have made a big difference to my life.

I am learning ... to make better use of my time.

In the kitchen... there is chaos - the freezer is defrosting and I haven't put the shopping away yet.  We're having chicken for tonight's meal. Hopefully!

I am wearing... t shirt and skirt.

I am creating... some more worksheets for my new pupils. - for the beginners this time.

I am going... to sort out the kitchen and then do an online order for a delivery of goodies to start restocking the freezer.

I am wondering... nothing in particular - too busy panicking about the state of the kitchen!

I am reading... I've just finished reading 'The Distant Hours' by Kate Morton - I really enjoyed it.  I haven't chosen what I'm going to read next but I have lots to choose from - I get all my books from my sister and she's just sent another load round.

I am hoping... that we get some good(ish) news from the hospital next week.

I am looking forward to... starting teaching again.

I am hearing... Doris Day singing - Ced is watching 'The Man Who Knew Too Much'.

Around the house... believe it or not, the house is still tidy.  It's much more relaxing.

I am pondering... how to make best use of the few days left before I go back to work.

One of my favorite things...  reading a good book.

A few plans for the rest of the week: hospital appointment for Ced on Tuesday, teaching Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Here is a thought I am sharing ... I'm not sure that I totally agree with this statement.  Is imagination more important than, or is it equally as important as, knowledge?

Looking Forward to 2012

No, I'm not wishing my life away!  I've just seen a brilliant idea over on ellens52 which I plan to do for myself in 2012.

It's about doing 52 things in the year that I have never done before.  At the moment I'm still thinking of ideas which is a lot harder than I thought, so any suggestions from you will be very much appreciated.  I want to do the sort of things that I say I've always wanted to do but have never got around to. I'm sure we all have lists like that.  Well  2012 is the year I'm going to get a lot of them done.  Maybe it will be the start of new hobbies/interests, maybe not. We'll see!

My list of ideas is here (I've created a new page for it) and as I complete the activities I'll post about it.

Can't wait to get started!

Show and Tell: Crafting Project - Botanical Gazette

Yesterday I was lucky enough to spend the morning at one of Teri's crafting classes. Teri is a Stampin' Up! demonstrator who I first met at a Stampin' Up! party hosted by my niece Laura (who just happens to live next door to Teri).  This is Teri's blog where you can see all the lovely things she makes.

Anyway, back to the class ... we were supplied with all the goodies needed to complete the 'Botanical Gazette' project, which involved making a card box in the shape of a book and 4 individual cards.  The class ran from 09:30 - 12:00 and I didn't manage to complete all the cards in that time but it only took about 30 minutes to finish them off at home.  Well, I left 2 pieces I needed at Teri's house so had to pop back to get them this morning but in total only about 30 minutes extra time at home was needed to finish the project, and here it is .....

This is the card box:

and this is what the inside looks like ....

Card No. 1 ...

Card No 2

Card No 3 (this is my favourite out of the cards)

Card No 4 (Teri, I know I didn't ruffle the ends of the bow, I decided to go for the plainer look)

As a bonus we also got to meet Teri's beautiful spotty dogs, Poppy and Lily ...

It was a really enjoyable morning, as expected when you're in the company of people who share the same interests.  I'm hoping to join in with some of the Technique Classes in the near future.  And, for the first time I posted pics of some handmade cards, which is what this blog was supposed to be about!  Hope you enjoy them.
