I'm Following a Tree | January 2015

I'm Following a Tree
I'm Following a Tree is organised by Lucy Corrander at Loose and Leafy, and is another one of those monthly memes that I've been reading for months, have been very interested in all the posts and was keen from the outset to join, but hesitated until now.  The reason for my hesitation will quickly become apparent;  the majority of the other posters are very knowledgeable whereas I really don't know that much about trees, except I know I love them.

I'm not even 100% sure what my tree is so that shows my level of ignorance, but I'm hoping to learn about it as the year progresses!  So, let me introduce you to my tree ...

It's growing just around the corner from my home by one of the public paths through the estate, and is the smallest and whitest of all the trees there.  I think it is a silver birch but please correct me if I've got it wrong!

The estate is ten years old so this tree will be younger than that as this area wasn't the first part to built and landscaped.  It's already lost a branch.

It's covered in catkins and buds.  I don't know if this is early or whether, like a lot of other plants, it has been tricked by the warmer weather.

There are a few leaves caught in the branches but whether they are from this tree or from one of its neighbours, I can't tell.  I like the contrast in colour between the dark branches and the white bark in the background.

And finally, the distinctive markings and the peeling bark.

I'm also linking this post to Sandie's 5 in 5 - I'm just a couple of days late with it! - which is a monthly meme where you post 5 images that have been taken in 5 minutes.

  6. Thank you for joining in with 5 in 5 this month Eileen - I love how you used this idea of taking 5 photos of one tree. I also love the idea of following the tree throughout the year. I may pop over and join in myself. By the way, you wasn't late posting on 5 in 5 - I always add my photos on 5th but the link is open up to 25th of the month so plenty of time!! Hope you will join in again sometime and I look forward to seeing your tree over the coming months.

  9. Hello Eileen, it is lovely to meet you and to say I'm glad I am not the only one who just joined Lucy in following a tree. I also have no knowledge to speak but am looking forward to learning a lot as the year progresses. Your photography has very wonderfully captured many lovely things about the tree you have chosen. That bark and how it peels away from the trunk is so interesting. I need to pay more attention to the trees around here where I live in Southern California and see if we have silver birches. I think if we do they have been imported from somewhere.

  10. So pleased you are Tree Following. There are now four people following birch trees. It will be interesting to see how they compare - being of different ages and living in different weathers. (The trees that is!)
