Oh, those photos are gorgeous! I love Wells Cathedral, one of the best in the country. Those scissor support arches are wonderful, they 'make' the place and yet it was designed without them and they were added for support. I wonder how the problem would've been solved today - certainly not in such a beautiful way! Margaret P
We have the glories of Exeter Cathedral not that far away. It is Decorated Gothic and although the exterior can't possibly match the glories of Wells, the interior is gorgeous, and is one of my favourites - but perhaps because it is 'local' and I've been in it many times. Salisbury is wonderful, I agree. Margaret P
Thanks Maggie. I took that one to show how they re-used scraps of stained glass. It was too expensive to throw away so was put to use in less 'important' windows.
What a wonderful place to explore. Oh wouldn't hearing a choir of young male voices just set off the stage of history; magnificent. Oh & to yesterday's post, was it because of Harry Potter?, not sure but I did know about chained libraries & actually have been in one, although the chains weren't as elegant.
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Extreme heat can certainly drain the body of energy & require it to work so much harder to cool itself.
The choristers were rehearsing while I was there, in preparation for that night's Evensong I think, based on what they were singing. It was a glorious sound.
I'm not sure what you are asking about Harry Potter. I've been wanting to visit the chained library for a while. In Wells, these tours were only made available to the general public last year (before that it was scholars, academics and special groups only) so it's been on my list of places to visit since I saw it advertised. I chose to get my act together now and visit now with the aim of getting a photo fot the SPSH.
Eileen my Harry Potter reference was to me, was it because of Harry Potter that I knew about chained books (col) ... I think this cathedral would be on my bucket list for sure.
Well, maybe I just will!! Sounds like a great plan. I have been weighing up whether to go to Weston this year - the sand sculptures look better than ever - so I will put my thinking cap on. Maybe when the schools have gone back..?
Maybe Maggie will join us as well. I'll email you both, but I have a fairly full diary for September as that's when the work on my house is being completed.
What lovely photos! You certainly have a photographer's eye! That second photo is very striking! I also like how they incorporated the bits of stained glass in the other windows. Thank you for sharing the photos.

I have to say that Salisbury is my favourite with Wells a close second - out if the local cathedrals that is.
