Thursday

I think it's Thursday. To be honest, I've lost track after a rather strange day yesterday when I was convinced it was Friday. In my defence, I didn't sleep well due to the heat and then spent most of the day alternating between wanting to sleep, feeling nauseous, and shivering! I'm perfectly fine today, so no idea what that was all about.

The highlight of the day was a flying visit from one of the children I used to teach, with her mum, to give me these flowers as a thank you. It was completely unexpected but very much appreciated (apologies for the rubbish photo).

I made a start on firming up my ideas for the planting so will carry on with that today. It's good fun but I keep getting carried away with the sheer number of plants on my plan! It's a good exercise though because it's making me think carefully about what I want. I'm clear in my mind on the style of garden I want to end up with and have listed a few must have shrubs and plants but that's as far as I've got. I'm looking for suggestions on summer flowers, various heights, which have an open airy structure rather than mound forming - any ideas please?

I'll stay at home today. It's too hot to be out so I have a gentle day at home ahead of me in the cool of the living room ... aren't electric fans wonderful!

  1. Do you want annuals or perennials?

I'm glad you're feeling better again and those flowers are really lovely. What a super present.

    1. Perennials where possible. I'll have cosmos every year and other annual in pots but hoping for perennials in the beds.

The little girl chose this bunch because it has some red flowers and she knows I like red!

  2. Glad you are feeling better, today. Maybe it was too hot for you? Those flowers are lovely! What a nice surprise to receive them! I hope you find a nice assortment of plants for the garden. Can you grow lilac? How about an apple tree? Sorry, I don't know what might grow well in your climate.

    1. Thanks for the suggestions. I've thought about including a couple of columnar fruit trees. There's not enough room for regular fruit trees and I don't know how difficult the columnar ones are to maintain so I will see what Danielle thinks.

Lilac is already on my list - great minds think alike! - but probably won't make the final selection. The variety I like best is probably too big for the space.

  3. I am closing the blinds, drawing the curtains in a bid to keep the heat out. Like an elderly lady in a 19 century novel. I wilt in the heat.

    1. Me too! I opened all the doors and windows to air the house and now the blinds are drawn and fans on. This is the only time of the year that I'm glad my living room stays much cooler than the rest of the house.

I've just heard the forecast for this area on the radio and they say there will be a thunderstorm this afternoon, which hopefully will clear the air.

  4. What a lovely floral surprise that was. I wonder if you weren't a little dehydrated, which is easy in hot weather. We are shivering with the dramatic drop in temperatures, I almost put the furnace on! Are you looking for a multi season look, as in pretty in spring/summer but then turn lovely colours for autumn? I'd would suggest Russian Blue Sage but it does get a bit floppy unless well "caged".

    1. Thanks.I'm aiming for a multi season look but we'll see how it goes! The sage may be a possibility for the front garden but I'd like to keep blues/purples to a minimum in the back garden. I've already decided on lavender in the back so that may be enough of the deeper purple.

I don't think I was dehydrated but may be wrong. I was drinking much more than usual so should have been okay. I wonder if my medication needs tweaking again, that's what it feels like.

  5. Sweet peas look and smell lovely if you can form a wigwam of canes. I am loving tall things like foxgloves, delphiniums and hollyhocks this year.

    1. Thank you. Sweet peas and delphinium are definites and will be in the garden somewhere. I love foxgloves and hollyhocks but they will have to be on the 'maybe' list as I'd like a variety of flower and leaf shapes and I don't think I will have the space for them.

  6. Gorgeous bouquet!

Lavender, maybe? Daisies? I am enjoying hearing all about your garden process :)

    1. Thanks, it is beautiful.

Lavender definitely, but I need to decide on the variety. Daisies will be perfect ... starts typing in the search bar ... 😊
