Me On Monday

Me on Monday is feeling rather lethargic after a hot and lazy weekend.

I had a visit from my nephew and his family on Saturday so that Miss C could show me the stationery I bought her for when she goes to senior school in September, and they also brought the new uniforms round for me to sew on the name tags ... that's my job for today. There's more than usual to do because there is a complete new uniform for Miss C. My nephew brought his toolbox with him and all the pictures in the living room are hanging on the walls, and there's been a bit of a rearranging of furniture so the room now looks and feels more homely.

We were supposed to meet up in the garden, correctly socially distanced and all that, but it was just too hot and, as the girls are both fair skinned, we sat in the cool of the living room. They are the first of family or friends to be indoors since lockdown started so I suppose they now count as my 'bubble', but it's not something I intend to do too often. At the moment I want my home to continue to be my 'safe space'. It seems so odd that inviting family into my home has become such a big deal and serves to show how much, and how quickly, life has changed.

Sunday was even hotter than Saturday so I didn't get much done. Most of the day was spent with my nose in a book, the fan on full blast, and a regular supply of cooling drinks. Today we're promised a thunderstorm, which hopefully will clear the air ... something needs to give!

As for today, it's sorting out the car first, then housework (dusting and floors + bathrooms if I have time), then knee exercises, piano practice, walking (but indoors if it's raining), and then I'll make a start on the name tags. I also need to spend some time in the garden, deadheading and watering if there's no rain, but I will leave that until the heat goes out of the day this evening after choir practice.

The Zoom choir practices are continuing, thankfully. From the preliminary results of the tests it seems unlikely that in-person practices will be allowed to resume any time soon, so the Zoom option is better that stopping completely. It's the same for brass and woodwind instruments so, for now, I have abandoned the idea of joining an adult band or amateur orchestra and will continue to focus on other things.

This month's mini project is to update my will, ensure my 'when I've gone' folder is up to date and is easy for someone else to follow, and to start the process of completing a living will and appointing a power of attorney. I've asked my nephew and wife if they will consider taking this on so am awaiting their response ... I sprung it on them on Saturday and asked them to think about it.

  1. So sensible to prepare all that paper work ahead. I have a box with all the documents, passports, birth certificates etc in. It makes it easy for family.

    1. That's what I'm trying to do, just make it easier for family when it's needed. It's pretty much up to date but I like to check from time to time.

  2. I like that picture and how the sofa cushions, etc., pick up some of the colors in the picture.

I updated my Will and other legal documents just after my cancer diagnosis, but, before I went for my surgery - just in case something happened. But, I should update some other information, such as contact numbers, again, as things have changed.

Hope it cools off for you and becomes more comfortable. Don't try to do too much in terms of housework, when it is hot. Take it easy.

    1. The room feels completely different now all the pictures are on the walls. It was supposed to be done before lock-down, so only four months late!

I will soon have another great niece or nephew so I want to amend the wording so that I don't need to update it every time there is another addition to that generation.

I have a slight pressure headache from the impending storm so am taking it easy. I've hoovered downstairs and the rest can wait. I'm sewing some of the uniform tags now but that's a nice easy job.

  3. Your picture over the sofa is quite lovely, very restful, calm. Nice having a handy nephew! About 5 years ago a friend's husband passed suddenly & it brought to light for us that wills, power of attorney, living wills, etc are SO necessary. Your family will thank you. I think, thankfully, most of us are still taking COVID & the precautions seriously. Cheers to a day outside for a walk & a water.

  4. The picture reminds me of a lake we used to visit regularly, although it's too vast to be our place!

I've had my will etc in place for years, since I bought my first home back in the 1970s, so this is just a regular check to make sure it's as up to date as it can be.

  5. Sounds like you are very productive these days. I understand your caution completely, and I only feel comfortable having family in my house, and visit with friends outside exclusively.

    1. I'm sure the productivity is as a result of clearing the majority of the decluttering. That took years but has not only cleared space in the house but left room psychologically to address other aspects of life I have neglected.

I wonder if we will ever return to socialising in the way we used to?

    1. I live alone and socialising is currently at a minimum, so I like to keep myself occupied.

The picture makes the room feel more homely. x

  7. It must be wonderful to have the pictures hung- makes such a difference to the place and allows you to make a long-overdue tick! Glad you were able to have people over and hope it didn't feel too stressy.

    1. It didn't feel too stressy because it wasn't planned so I didn't have time to think about it. It was just too hot to sit in the garden which is in full sun all afternoon so decamping to sit indoors sort of just happened. Afterwards I had a moment's panic but pulled myself together - we didn't sit too close and I think the risk was very low. It did cheer me up though!

  8. It's a beautiful picture. Very calming.

Mum says it was very hot. I should have been there this week. Sigh. Sounds like you had a lovely visit. A lot of schools here are not going back when they usually do. I am so glad my children are all grown. I can't imagine the struggle parents will have - especially single parents who already have enough on their plate.

    1. Your mum is right, it is very hot here although it's forecast to rain every day this week.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about the return to school. Fortunately we live in the South West where infection rates are consistently below the average for the UK but even so, it's not zero risk.
