The meeting is on Monday, so I need to get it finished by then, and then I'll carry on looking at options for summer breaks. There's too much choice, that's the problem! I spent a good part of yesterday looking at places in Norfolk, which wasn't even on my original list but is now a distinct possibility!

I've received an appointment for the retina clinic at the Royal United Hospital for the annual check of my left eye, so that's a relief. It was due at the beginning of January and it's now on the 18th March, so only a couple of months late, which I don't think is too bad considering how things are going with the NHS lately. While I'm at the hospital I will check on my referral for my knees, just to make sure I am in the system.
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-3736693878104113762024-03-06T05:47:00.000+00:002024-03-06T05:47:00.129+00:00Wednesday

I'm disappointed ... this is a brand new sealed jigsaw puzzle and there is one piece missing. I've never had this problem with a new puzzle, but there's a leaflet in the box explaining how to report this sort of problem, so I am assuming that it has happened enough times for the company to publish that information with every puzzle they produce. So now I need to send five puzzle pieces to them and they will send me a new jigsaw puzzle ... hopefully one that's complete this time.

I managed to get some of the filing done yesterday and I'll carry on with that this morning. Once that's done I want to start looking for ideas for some short summer breaks. I'd like to do another trip to London to see three or four shows, so that should be easy enough to arrange. The other trips ... I don't know for sure, but possibilities are a short break in Edinburgh, a visit to Chester or York, and a visit to the Brighton area to see my friend's daughters. Oh, and maybe a couple of coach day trips as well ... they're always good fun.
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-24784671783888734342024-03-05T06:00:00.001+00:002024-03-05T06:00:00.142+00:00Keeping Busy

I think it will be a busy day today. I feel the need to be productive after such an emotional day yesterday. There's plenty of choice! I need some shopping, there are two boxes of charity shop donations to dispose of, and maybe a car load of items to take to the recycling yard. If I don't feel like going outdoors there is a pile of paperwork to be sorted and filed, so like I said, there is plenty of choice.

On a different note, I had to phone my GP surgery yesterday about my repeat prescriptions. I'd received a text to say that my request for medication had been denied, but nobody could work out why so my request was reinstated and authorised. During the conversation the receptionist queried whether I was due a blood test and I said my annual tests were usually done in February but I was still waiting for my appointment. She checked my record and it seems that my 'annual' tests have now become an 'every 18 months' test so aren't due until August. When I queried it, it was explained away as "being the norm" ... I wonder when it changed? Has anyone had this happen to them?
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-48006998296068870182024-03-04T08:37:00.001+00:002024-03-04T08:37:20.953+00:00A Day For Remembering

It's eleven years ago today that I lost Ced. I looked out of the window first thing to be greeted by a white landscape ... the promised snow arrived overnight. It won't last long. By the time I'd showered and dressed most of it had disappeared and the only evidence in my garden was this sprinkling on top of the pots. Hopefully, that will be our lot for this year!

The second surprise was a text from the youth band I used to work with, asking me to help with their recruitment. It's come completely out of the blue and I need to give it some thought before replying. I used to do it for them but it was hard work transporting all the brass instruments around to the schools and I'm not sure that I'm up to doing that again, now that walking is so painful. Part of me thinks it would be nice to be involved with the band again, but it would be a big commitment so it's not something to rush into. It was nice to be asked though, and I will at least offer suggestions even if my decision ends up being that I can't actual handle the recruitment myself.

I wonder if there will be a third one? They do say that things come in threes, so fingers crossed that the third surprise is a lovely one!
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-1074548274405777242024-03-01T11:51:00.006+00:002024-03-01T11:59:41.310+00:00Monthly Photo Challenge - Older Than You
The theme for the February monthly photo challenge was 'older than you", which meant that I was looking for things that pre-dated 1955. The recommended software, and the one I eventually went with, was Family Tree Maker.

I loved it and bought all the updates when necessary, but ... then it was discontinued. I carried on using it but with lack of updates and bug fixes it eventually became obvious I needed to look for an alternative. I settled on Roots Magic, which at the time appeared to do what I wanted, but it was a compromise and I was never entirely happy with it.

So imagine my delight when I saw that Family Tree Maker has now been taken on by another software company and a 2024 version will be released later this year. Guess who ordered her copy today? I will receive a copy of the 2019 version (which I somehow missed) and then an update to the 2024 version when it becomes available.

So my plan is to move my tree over to the new software and tidy/check hints, etc. as I go. My tree corrupted when I added Little Man's birth details three years ago and I've never been entirely confidant in it since, so I will take the opportunity to input all the details by hand instead of creating a GEDCOM file. The file will be a speedier option but it may also transfer any errors and corrupt data, so by starting afresh I will know that I have clean data. It will just take ages but it will keep me out of mischief!

I also joined an Ancestry DNA group on Facebook to see if I can pick up any tips for interpreting my own DNA matches, hopefully leading to information about my paternal grandfather's ancestry. I saw a few references to Facebook groups called DNA Angels where members will help you trace your matches and find the missing connections. I haven't done anything about it yet but it will be free and it may just provide enough information to get me started, so I will look into it a bit more once I have transferred my family tree back over to Family Tree Maker.

I feel quite excited about the possibility of assistance from the DNA Angels, but mostly I'm just over the moon at the return of my favourite genealogy software!
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-55644821870841476482024-02-28T06:00:00.001+00:002024-02-28T06:00:00.344+00:00The February Garden
There's not really much change from last month! It's going well and I'm on a roll! I haven't found anything yet that will help me break through some of the brick walls I have but there's always a chance that I will find something, so I'll keep looking. Probably of more use is a message I've received from one of my DNA matches, just making contact and offering assistance, so I'll write to her today and either ask to view her huge, but private, online tree, or ask her to check for certain names for me. Fingers crossed that this produces the information I need to make a real start on researching my paternal grandfather's ancestry.

Yesterday passed quickly as a result of being so engrossed in the family tree stuff and I'm sure it'll be the same today. It's one of the aspects of the research that I like, i.e. having something I can really concentrate on to the point of being oblivious to anything else, much the same as losing myself in the pages of a good book, or when I'm listening to music and/or playing an instrument.
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-84047879388908151612024-02-16T05:51:00.000+00:002024-02-16T05:51:00.135+00:00Friday

My first lot of daffodils are flowering so there is some colour in the garden at long last!

I went to my swimming lesson yesterday, but didn't swim. As I was getting into the water I twisted my knees ... don't really know what I did, but it was too painful to do any of the leg movements. I decided to stay and benefit from some exercise where the water was supporting my weight, even if I was only walking. I did progress to practicing floating, on my front and back, and that has really improved. I can now flip between floating on my back to floating on my front, which I've failed to do on my own on previous attempts. So that's something else to practice the next time we go swimming.

Today starts with personal training. Both knees are still painful but Amy will adapt the exercise programme if I need to remain seated, so I will still go. Then I have to wait in for a parcel. If that's delivered early enough I'll pop into town for a few things - bread, potatoes, carrots, and gifts for the new baby and her big brother.

But what I really want to do is carry on with the family tree. Yesterday I was investigating some of the Ancestry hints and managed to make some progress working my way through what is a huge list, so want to carry on with that and see if it opens up any new possibilities for research. I have tomorrow and Sunday morning free so am planning to carry on clearing the hints and am vowing that I will clear them weekly in the future ... but then, I always say that and rarely do!
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-34861832751290447892024-02-15T05:49:00.007+00:002024-02-15T05:49:00.131+00:00The Midweek Days

Yesterday was a lovely, gently paced day. I spent the morning visiting friend Joy and catching up all the news. It's been ages since we saw each other and it was great to be able to spend that time together. When I first went for an assessment at the swimming pool I'd actually taken the slot Joy had originally booked for herself but had had to cancel for some reason, so I'm now hoping that she will re-book for an assessment and that maybe we'll be able to have lessons at the same time ... that'll be fun!

In the afternoon I read a little, played the piano, and chatted for ages on the phone with friend H. Her house purchase is finally going through and she's hoping to empty her stuff from my freezer by the end of the month, or the first week of March at the latest. Now I know the approximate date I can plan around that, so batch cooking will be postponed until next month and in the meantime I will use up some odds and ends for meals. There's probably some UFOs (unidentified freezer objects) to eat up as well.

Today, I'm updating the family tree to include details of the new baby and also continue printing off some of the reference materials for my records. That'll probably take up most of the morning ... family tree research tends to be like a big hole I fall down and just don't realise how much time is passing. It's my swimming lesson this afternoon and then friend L may be coming round for a meal this evening. It's not a definite arrangement but is dependent on her family commitments ... hopefully she'll be able to make it, but if not we'll rearrange it for next week.
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-62609936665521407912024-02-14T06:00:00.038+00:002024-02-14T06:00:00.156+00:00WPSH link up
We're now half way through the WPSH so it seems like a good time to share our progress so far.

I've found photos for 9 of the prompts so far ... the complete list is at the end of this post. The place opens at 7 am, and we're aiming to be there as close to opening time as we can. We'll stay for 30 - 45 minutes and I plan to use that time to gain more confidence floating on my front and back, and also build some stamina by swimming as many lengths as I can in the time left. On the way home we'll do a bit of a detour so I can take my monthly photo for the blog.

There's no other plans for the rest of the morning, so I will use the time to finish up a couple of tasks on my list ... move the four pots of bulbs from behind the garage to join the rest of the bulb pots outside the kitchen door, and then continue sorting out things for the charity shop. When I say "move the pots", obviously I will have the supervisory role, and my friend will provide the labour!

It's the book group meeting this afternoon, and I haven't finished reading the book. I just misjudged how long it would take to read it but I also haven't really enjoyed the chapters I have read ... nothing wrong with the writing, I just wasn't in the right mood for an historical novel. I'll put it to one side for now and try again in a month or so.

I think we'll finish the day watching some more episodes of Homeland. We're on series 3 (out of 8, with 12 episodes in each series) and are loving it!
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-245180082196852772024-02-11T06:00:00.013+00:002024-02-11T06:00:00.127+00:00Weekly Reflections

Reasons to be cheerful ...

chatting, texting, and emailing with family and friends

finally getting my new oven installed

enjoying an early morning swimming session at Frome

watching the Homeland series ... we're both enjoying it

enjoying a long chat with my nephew when he came round to do some DIY for me

having a great time on Hayling Island, staying in the Warner Leisure Hotel at Lakeside

enjoying an evening at Bristol Hippodrome watching the musical, Wicked

indulging in some long awaited retail therapy at IKEA in Southampton

enjoying a laughter filled session of canasta

finally being able to respond to comments on my blog

welcoming a new great-niece to the family 🩷🩷

saving money when restocking the cupboards thanks to the Ocado introductory offer

adding more dates to my diary

I am grateful ...

to my nephew for finding the time to do all the DIY tasks I had on my list

to friend K for her help in sorting out my blogging issues. I definitely couldn't afford their prices on a normal shop but with that discount I'm able to restock the cupboards and buy the items I'll need for some batch cooking I want to do, and still save some money compared to my usual supermarket. It should be delivered between 11:30 and 12:30. Apart from that, it'll be a stay at home and catch up on some chores sort of day. The cleaners came on Thursday so the house is clean and tidy, but the beds need changing so, together with the holiday clothes, there will be a few loads of washing to do.

I'll start the batch cooking tomorrow. There's not much space in the freezer because I'm storing some stuff for friend H in there, so I'll only be making two, maybe three, dishes to start with ... definitely shepherd's pie and a chicken curry, and maybe a vegetarian chilli. All of them will freeze down into six portions so it'll be a start on the freezer restock. H will be taking her stuff later this month, assuming her house purchase completes on time with no more problems, and then I can decide on what other meals I want to make.
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-70217359796342125632024-02-09T05:52:00.001+00:002024-02-09T05:52:00.131+00:00Fika on Friday

Fika (in Swedish custom) is a break from activity in which people drink coffee, eat cakes or other light snacks and relax with others. Hopefully all of that will be disposed of next Monday and Tuesday, when I know I will have some help. Within the next week I also want to photograph some of the larger items still to be sold and send them to various companies to gauge the level of interest. I keep putting this off, so I am giving myself a good talking to and am determined to get it done this time. Maybe I can summon up the enthusiasm to do it this afternoon ... stranger things have been known to happen!
Eileen Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06340398156618870705noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5734193338502038294.post-56335299654510190602024-02-08T05:55:00.000+00:002024-02-08T05:55:00.129+00:00Lakeside

This is the only photo I took during our 3 nights/4 days stay at the Warner Leisure Lakeside Hotel on Hayling Island. Well, actually I did take a few more but the rest were for various photo challenges so can't be included in this post.

We left home early on Friday. We knew that we wouldn't have access to our room until 3 pm but we'd planned to stop for breakfast on the way and then spend time shopping in IKEA in Southampton ... I didn't get everything on my list but was able to get the more important items I wanted for the kitchen so I was happy. IKEA is exhausting though, isn't it?

We arrived at the hotel dead on 3 pm. This particular hotel is more like a holiday camp as the guests stay in chalets, not rooms in a building. We were greeted at the main entrance with our chalet key and a welcome pack containing all the information we needed and we set off to find our chalet and to settle in. We were pleased with our chalet ... it was quite small but had everything we needed, and once we'd unpacked and put everything away, it didn't feel too cramped at all.

This was our first time at one of the Warner Leisure Hotels and the schedule of all the activities on offer was a surprise ... a lovely surprise, much more than we were expecting. For those of you who don't know about this hotel group, they offer weekend and midweek breaks for adults only with the activities on offer varying depending on the facilities at the individual hotels. You need to pay extra for some of the activities but the majority are included in the cost of your stay. Activities at Lakeside included rifle and pistol shooting, crazy golf, dancing, table tennis, fishing, swimming, quizzes, gin tasting, bowls, late night disco, as well as the evening shows ... we chose these dates because the main act was a Queen tribute band, and very good they were too.

We went for a drive around the island on the Saturday. The plan was to take some seascapes but it was overcast and the light wasn't brilliant so I didn't get to take any. I did take a few photos for the WPSH and the February monthly photo challenge though. Back at the hotel we fitted in another swimming session and also tried out the sauna and the steam room. My friend did the rifle shooting and then we spent the rest of the day and evening in the main building, taking part in various quizzes, playing some board games, enjoying a lovely three course meal, and then watching the evening's entertainment. We went back to our chalet after we'd seen the Queen concert. By then it was gone 11:30 pm and well past my usual bed time but the majority of the other guests stayed for the late night disco ... they had more energy than me!

On Sunday we treated ourselves to an afternoon tea, for which we had to pay £17.50 each which I thought was a very reasonable price. Before that we'd gone to a tea tasting session ... I'm not a tea drinker but was hoping there might be one that I'd like. No such luck, although Bless will be pleased that there was one containing a mix of Sri Lankan black tea and something else that was almost palatable! The evening entertainment was a show filled with songs from the musicals, which we'd planned to stay and watch but were both too tired in the end, so returned to the cabin to pack.

We had until 10 am to vacate our chalet on the Monday but we opted for an early breakfast and were on our way home by 8:45 am. We stopped for hot chocolate on the way home but were back early enough to go to our usual canasta group on the Monday afternoon.

We rounded off our mini break with a trip to the Bristol Hippodrome on Tuesday night to see the musical, Wicked. It's the first time either of us had seen it and we both enjoyed it, so a good end to a lovely few days.

We'll definitely book another Warner Hotel break for some time later this year.
