Expanding My World!

Back at the beginning of August I wrote here about the need to start getting out and about and expanding my rapidly shrinking world. I've been giving it a lot of thought since then and have some ideas of what I can do, so now it's time to push myself to get things started.

I've decided to start with trying out some of the u3a groups that are organised by three of the other local u3as. It will mean joining one or more of the other u3as but it's not expensive and there is a lot to gain in terms of enhancing my life. I currently attend two groups at the u3a where I'm a member - Canasta is twice a month on Monday afternoons, and Something Snappy (which I organise) is once a month on a Monday morning. I go to them with Niall and I don't intend to give those up, but am thinking of trying the other organisations as it will give me the opportunity to make new friends as well as enjoying whatever the activity is.

Here's what I've been looking at ...

  • Hand Bells * - twice a month on a Tuesday morning
  • Card & Table Games * - where they play Canasta, Cribbage, Rummikub, and Triominoes - monthly on a Tuesday afternoon
  • Circle Dancing ** - monthly on a Wednesday afternoon
  • Devizes Doodlers ** - monthly on a Thursday morning
  • Book Sleuths ** - a book club focusing exclusively on crime fiction - monthly on a Thursday afternoon
  • Rummikub * - weekly on a Friday morning
  • Pub Games Night * - occasional, no set day
* groups I'd go to with Niall
** groups I'd go to on my own

I don't intend to do all of these but do plan to try them all out before I make any decisions. I'm particularly interested in the Circle Dancing but I don't know if I'm steady enough on my feet to take part. However, it is a fun form of exercise which I know I'd enjoy, so I will have a go. I'm also very interested in the Book Sleuths and the Devizes Doodlers so I just have to hope that they are run on different weeks as I don't think I'm up to doing both on the same day!

There's also a curry club group which meets monthly on a Monday night, but I think I'd prefer to see if it's possible to organise something similar with the u3a I'm a member of, to stay closer to home.

Also, I used to do lots of coach trips organised by a local firm and they have just published their list of coach trips for the first few months of next year so I will be looking at those to see if there is anything I fancy and try to get a few trips booked. It's always nice to have something to look forward to, isn't it?

  1. Hello Eileen,

We do understand what you mean about how life can become very much curtailed as one ages. Many activities carried out previously either hold little appeal or are no longer possible. And so it becomes too easy to "let's not and say that we did"....a catchphrase of ours!!
So, you list of possibilities here sound most inviting, apart from for us the circle dancing where we really feel that we would endanger others. And, one can always give things a try and bow out gracefully if they do not suit. As for the organised trips, that sounds a most attractive option. Years ago we were members of the Woolhope Club in Hereford which organised trips to private houses of historical interest. We could be peeping toms for the day and loved every minute.
