25/52: Write a Blog Post Every Day for One Month

Quite a simple thing, but one I thought I wouldn't do .... in August 2012, for the first time ever, I updated my blog every single day!

Cards for Men

Yesterday, I treated myself to another card making session. The theme of this one was 'cards for men', something I find particularly difficult to make as I don't have any suitable stamps.

We made three cards and a memo pad:

I'm not sure about the nautical stamps but I like the motorbike and the two different Happy Birthday stamps so I'll probably end up getting them at some point.

24/52: Paint a Pot

I wasn't any good at pottery when I was at school so I never got to the stage where I actually painted a finished piece. I think the teacher thought it was a waste of good paint!

Well, that's all changed.  Last week we went to 'Flying Saucers', the painting pottery cafe in Warminster and we each chose a piece of pottery to paint.  I chose a little car, Tweenie chose a penguin money box and Tinkerbell chose a drinks can money box.  Laura, their mum didn't do one (which was just as well because she is a brilliant artist and would have put us all to shame) but just helped the children with the tricky bits.

Today, we went back to collect our efforts, all bright and shiny from the kiln.  I don't think we'll win any prizes, but they've turned out a lot better than I thought they would and we definitely had fun doing it.  So for the first and probably the only time, I've painted a pot ... well, a pottery car.

Hay Bales and Horses

I love this time of the year when the fields are full of hay bales

And I couldn't resist taking some photos of these two horses.  The poor things were plagued by flies - I felt very sorry for them.

When Life Was Simpler

Do you remember when ....
... all the girls wore dresses?
... it took five minutes for the TV to warm up, the test card, the potter's wheel?
... nearly everyone's Mum was at home when the children came home from school?

... nobody owned a purebred dog?

... pocket money was only 2 shillings a week?

... you'd pick up a pin and say " see a pin and pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck"?

... green shield stamps?

... it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents?

... lying on your back in the grass with your friends and saying things like, "that cloud looks like a ..."?

... playing games with no adults to help children with the rules of the game?

... there were no safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?

... when coca-cola came in glass bottles?

... fruit salads, black jacks and sherbet dabs?

... the Lone Ranger, Champion the Wonder Horse and Black Beauty?

... hula hoops, french skipping and kiss chase?

... sweet cigarettes, chocolate mice and five boys chocolate?

... milk was delivered to your doorstep in glass bottles?

... all the women wore pinnies?

... 'race issues' meant arguing over who ran the fastest?

... decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo"?

... it wasn't odd to have two or three 'best friends'?

... "olly-olly-oxen-free" made perfect sense?

... spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was a cause for giggles?

... the worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?

... you pegged playing cards to the spokes of your bike wheels?

... water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

... paper dolls, spirograph and fuzzy felt?

... Dandy, Beano, Beazer and Topper comics?

... Bunty, Judy and Jackie comics?

Do you remember when the grass was green, the sky was blue and summer lasted for ever?  Take a break from your 'grown-up' life and share a childhood memory with me .... go on .... I double-dare you!

The good news first!

The good news is that I can now get the depth of field I want in my photos.  I've had real problems achieving this but I've got it sorted.  This one was taken today in my sister's garden.

The bad news is that I've worked out what the problem is.  The camera isn't working properly, probably as a result of being dropped that time. There haven't been any obvious problems but I worked out today that it is actually focusing behind the focus point, so to get this shot (which still isn't pin sharp) I've had to put the focus point behind the flower.  It sounds complicated, but I know what I mean, just can't explain it very well.
So the camera will be going to the camera hospital and my old camera will be back in use for a while.  Hope it's not too expensive - it won't be covered by the guarantee because I dropped it.

An award

Mary @ merrydotdandy has kindly nominated my blog for the Liebster Award. I now have to tell you 11 things about myself, answer her questions, nominate 11 other blogs and ask them 11 new questions.  The award goes to blogs with less than 200 followers.  Many thanks Mary.

So first things first, 11 things about myself:
  1. I love all sorts of puzzles - quizzes, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, you name it, I love it!
  2. I discovered I was claustrophobic the first and only time I went potholing.
  3. I like cooking.
  4. I relax by reading crime novels.
  5. My favourite colour is red.
  6. My favourite TV programme is 'Lewis'.
  7. I don't have a pet but would like to get a dog when I eventually retire.
  8. I'm quite shy.
  9. I can't wear perfume a it gives me a rash which looks like love-bites!  It's a waste of time anyway as I have no sense of smell!
  10. I used to go clay pigeon shooting.
  11. I've never been on a roller coaster and have no plans to.

Next, to answer Mary's questions:
  1. Tell us your take on exercise:  I don't do any.  Exercise is just something the doctor keeps suggesting and I keep ignoring!
  2. Explain your family. I live with my partner, don't have children although he has an adult son.  I have two older brothers and a twin sister and from them I have 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 4 great nieces and 3 great nephews.  I love them all to bits and can't imagine life without them.
  3. What is your favorite book? OK, books- limited to 10. This is so hard.  Probably 'I heard the owl call my name' by Margaret Craven.  I also like all of the Harry Potter books and the Terry Pratchet Discworld series.  That's way more than 10 but at least I didn't list all of the titles!
  4. Name the character in Winnie the Pooh, most like you and why. I'm a cross between tigger and owl, or so I've been told.  Tigger because I can be bouncy and a bit of a whirlwind when I get an idea. Owl, because of my general knowledge - makes me an ideal quiz team partner!
  5. Shoes: Discuss.  I would prefer to go barefoot is it was practical. I rarely wear heels now, always opt for flats  as it's more comfortable for teaching.
  6. Were you ever in a parade...when, where, why, how, what did you do? Yes, too many times to mention individual events.  School parades as a child and as an adult playing in marching bands and Rememberance Day parades.
  7. Name 3 favorite dinners...what and/or where...? In Plymouth in the 70s with college friends at a seafood restaurant, any family celebration dinner, at Avebury with Ced - a spur of the moment decision and the last time we ever ate out together.
  8. Tell about a favorite vacation. A week spent on Holy Island with Ced.
  9. you play or only listen...what are your favorites I'm a music teacher, playing and teaching brass and woodwind instruments.  I listen to all sorts of music, especially when I'm driving.
  10. What is your favorite hobby? Photography, but also on the list and depending on my mood, is genealogy, sewing, reading, cooking.
  11. What animal is of most interest to you? I'd like a dog one day.  If kittens remained kittens and didn't grow into cats I'd also have lots of kittens!
I'm nominating the following blogs.  This was a dificult decision as I obviously don't want to offend anyone so I have chosen bloggers who I think have not ever been nominated before.  I know there's only 6 on this list so I'm also offering it to anyone else who's interested.

And finally, here's my questions:
  1. Where do you work and what do you do?
  2. Have you ever won a prize in a competition and, if so, what did you win?
  3. What's your favourite song?
  4. Documentary or drama - which do you prefer?
  5. Name the 4 guests (living or dead) you'd invite to a meal.
  6. Sport - what's your favourite sport and are you a player or a spectator?
  7. Do you prefer to holiday abroad or stay at home?
  8. What scares you?
  9. In a crowd or on your own - where are you most at ease?
  10. Bath or shower?
  11. Do you ever listen to plays on the radio?
Thanks again to Mary.

26 Week Photo Challenge - Faces

I thought I'd shock you all and post a day early!

Photo No 1.  This is my favourite one.  It's a quick snap grabbed when he spotted the camera and was running towards me, hence the messy background (which I haven't had time to sort out, but will get round to it one day!)

Photo No 2.  I spotted these two at a local farmer's market when I was working on a series of photos for the course I'm doing.  This image is cropped out of a much bigger scene.  I like that they are both engrossed in whatever they are looking at.

Photo No 3. I couldn't resist it! I like the texture in this one.  This was the only possible angle to take the shot as it is obviously a favourite perching place for the local birds and this was the only clean view.
