Five on Friday | The Little Things

Read | I'm half way through 'The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared' by Jonas Jonasson.  I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would - I think it's partly because I'm reading it on the Kindle and I much prefer to read a proper book.  Serves me right for being a cheapskate (the Kindle book was a free download!!).

Watched | I've only watched one thing this week.  I think it might be a new programme - 'No Such Thing as the News' - which is a review of the most interesting (i.e. funny/unusual) events of the week by the QI research team.  I'll watch it again if I'm staying in, and if I remember it's on.

Heard | The dawn chorus every morning this week .... a lovely way to start each day.

Made | A selection of meals for the freezer.  I need to get back into eating properly now that the kitchen is finished, so I've started on the bulk cooking again.  So far this week I've made tomato soup, shepherdess pie, macaroni cheese, and fish pie.

Worn I seem to be sticking to the same colour for whole weeks.  First it was blue, then red, last week was black & white, and this week it was burgundy's turn.

And Lastly ... the last of the workmen were here today (gas boiler service/repair, and window cleaning and gutter clearing) so next week I'll have the house back to myself, which I'm really looking forward to.  It's half term so I have no teaching to do, and the plan is to get on and do some serious decluttering .... kitchen things, clothes, books and garage.

Thanks to Morgana for organising the Little Things, and to Amy for organising Five on Friday.

  1. It is nice to have your house back after work men have been! I was going to read the 100 year old man but after your comments maybe I won't. I'm a cheep skate too and often get books for very little on kindle. I agree tho, there's nothing like a real book. Have a good weekend. B xx

  2. Fantastic that all your home re-design/changes/repairs are done - looking forward to seeing the after photos of your kitchen. I did not like the 100 year old man book, I wanted to, but no, it was not for me. I have just started reading The Nest. Happy weekend ahead.

  3. I bet you're glad the renovations are done. It will be nice to have your house back to yourself. I haven't read that book - thought about it - but haven't picked it up yet. I love my kindle, but I sometimes love the feel of a real book and sometimes find it easier to read them.

Have a great weekend. It's a bank holiday here in US too.

  4. I think you could be right about the experience of reading on the kindle. I can't warm to them at all. But I loved 100 Year Old Man and have just finished his latest, which feels a little like he dashed it off in a hurry.

  5. The fish pie sounds interesting. I like the idea of bulk cooking; would make things easier down the road with meal preparation. I do read a lot on my tablet; but there is something neat about reading an actual book and being able to go back and re-read something; harder on the tablet to do so I have found. Glad the work is done; that is always a relief.

  6. I do a lot of bulk cooking for the freezer and for my parents which makes life a little easier. I have never come across a Shepherdess pie before, what is the difference between that and a shepherds pie?

    1. Shepherdess pie doesn't have any meat. It's a mixture of lentils and vegetables, topped with mashed potato.

  7. I liked the 100 year Old Man book, but to each their own. Good to get your kitchen back.

  8. The dawn chorus sounds like a wonderful way to start the day. Glad you'll have the home back to quiet next week and it sounds like the timing was good with half term. I'm in awe of your bulk cooking. It makes a lot of sense for busy daily schedules. Hope your weekend is relaxing.

  9. The 100 year old man book is the only book that I have had from audible.com that I returned half way through. I just didn't get it. I listen to a lot of books like this when cooking, cleaning and gardening as I don't get much time to read. Usually I can listen to books that I would normally not pick up as a book but not that one!

  10. Hope your decluttering goes well. I find it hard to part with things, but Marie Kondo's decluttering book really helped me let it go (not put it back) so I very much recommend it.

  11. It's so hard to keep up during renovations. Congratulations on getting some meals in the freezer. I should set that as a goal for myself...

  12. I know what you mean about colours and clothes. I went through a blue stage a couple of weeks ago, then last week was red. I think black and white might be on the cards this week.

  13. Renovations tend to wreak havoc on a variety of things. Your meals tucked away in the freezer will come in handy. Hope all the fixing and decluttering goes well this week.

  14. Oh no! that is a real shame, I love the 100 year old man, must admit the follow book I did not enjoy as much can't quite recall the name, Swedish king was in the title somewhere.
