Garden Photos

This is the front of my bungalow. It doesn't have much street appeal as all of the interest is at the back of the property. The stack of white boards on the drive is the supply of plasterboard for the ceilings, and the grey bin would normally be behind my car but today is bin day, so it'll be moved back in once it's been emptied.

The front door is on the side of the building and the windows you can see (two at the front and one at the side) are the bedrooms.

The front garden is just laid to gravel and as I am typing this, Gardener M is clearing all the weeds. There is currently one shrub and the brackets for some hanging baskets. I may plant some more shrubs by the low wall and possibly a couple of prickly ones underneath the bedroom windows, but that's for some time in the future as I need to get indoors finished first.

Moving to the back garden, this is the pathway between the side of the bungalow and the garage. The garage door in on the left and the door to the kitchen on the right. The green gate lead to the front of the property and the back garden is behind where I stood to take this photo.

Here's the conservatory and to the left of it is the kitchen window and a small brick structure where the boiler is housed. Where all my pots are is a small paved patio area.  The pots won't be staying there in the long term but there's a lot of tidying to do before they can be placed around the garden. I won't be keeping all of them as some of the plants will be planted around the garden.

Next, some views of the garden, taken from three of the corners. I was struggling to walk when I took these photos and couldn't get to the final corner, but these give you an idea of what the garden currently looks like.

The green shed is on its last legs and will eventually go. I have the garage to store the gardening stuff so don't really need the expense of a new shed on top of everything else. If I did decide to replace it, I think I'd prefer a greenhouse rather than a shed.

The six box bushes will have to be removed as they have box blight. I'm not too upset about that as don't like them anyway, by which I mean that I don't like the formal arrangement of the box bushes against the informality of the rest of the view.

This is the path at the other side of the house but it doesn't lead anywhere and isn't wide enough to be planted up. I may change the small piece of fencing at the end to make a gate to give access to the front garden, but it's not really necessary.

And finally, the stream at the bottom of the garden. I don't own this but do have a responsibility to keep the bank adjoining my property clear of weeds, etc. They're not particularly good photos as I couldn't manage the steps leading down to the stream today ... maybe I have more success another time.

I hope you enjoyed the tour of my new garden. The initial plan is for M to get it tidy again and attempt to improve the quality of the lawn. The bigger of the two lawns will stay but the smaller one will eventually go and that area will be planted up with lots of colour. There is a restriction on what I can plant within a certain distance of the stream, so no trees or big shrubs at that end of the garden. I'd hate to spoil the view anyway so it needs some careful thought on how to add colour and interest and still maintain the views for myself and the neighbours. Watch this space!

  1. You have a lovely size garden, with the stream you should get some wildlife in, can't wait to see your transformation.

    1. It feels very countrified here. There's lots of birds in the trees on the opposite side of the stream - I've seen a robin and lots of magpies and pigeons, but there are also a number of birds that I've heard but not seen. There's also a squirrel, which hasn't ventured into my garden yet, and I've seen a couple of foxes. xx

    1. Thanks Lynn. I had a chat with my gardener and we discussed various ways of adding colour and variety to the garden without detracting from the view. I doubt much will be done this year as any money I have will be used in getting indoors up to scratch. All I'm sure of so far is I want to add a purple/pink fuchsia bush. xx

    1. This garden was an extra bonus when I found the bungalow. It's a manageable size, not too big like a lot of the bungalows I saw. xx
