All About ... the Art Course Day 6

No painting today - it was all about perspective, learning about one, two and three point perspectives.

After the initial explanation we had a go at a simple sketch, trying out two point perspective and then having a quick try at three point (the smaller sketches).

I already understood the theory so this was a refresher for me but some of the others found it more challenging to start with.  We do have an excellent teacher though, so everyone got there in the end.

The next task was to put the theory into practice  by drawing a house.  This was done step-by-step and measured out using a ruler.  The perspective lines were also drawn using a ruler and are a lot darker than you'd do if this was in an actual drawing, but we were asked to do bolder lines so they were easy to see (as a reference for any future drawings).  Obviously, you wouldn't use a ruler to draw the lines in an actual drawing either.

Finally, we had a go at creating a drawing which we copied from a photo, learning how to use a grid to transfer and resize the original image. I only have the basic outline here and need to add the detail, a task for later in the week.

Next week we'll be finishing off our watercolours of the grapes and then starting on acrylics. We've been advised to wear old clothes, so I think it may be a bit messier!

  1. That is very interesting with the perspectives; I'm sure I would have been the one in the class that had trouble with getting the concept, but I can see how important it would be to get it as it relates to drawing. That is interesting too about transferring the picture on the grid to your picture using grid.

  3. I remember doing this at school, a very useful thing to know. Your house looks really good, you have a good eye Eileen.

  4. I did perspectives at school, same as Sandie. I wasn't very good though. Your reproduction of the photo looks like it's off to a good start. It's a neat trick to use the grid to work out proportions and size!
