138/365: Honeysuckle

The honeysuckle belongs to my neighbour.  It grows over the fence and I've enjoyed watching its changes in the time I have lived in this house, but the newest change is that I've cut it right back and will ask them to stop it growing over in the future.  The reasons for this decision?  It's blocking out the light to one of my hanging baskets, which is suffering as a result, and I've now reached the stage where I want to think about/sort out the area immediately underneath where it grows over, which should be in full sun but isn't because of the shade the honeysuckle creates.

It looks a lot lighter in that corner already and I'm happy with my decision.  I will miss the honeysuckle though, so maybe I'll get one of my own to plant on the other side of the garden.

  1. I bet it did smell good though, but I agree if it is blocking the sunlight, it needs to be cut back.

  2. I have several honeysuckle plants in my garden, so that would be one I could take cuttings from, although I've never tried before, so can't guarantee a result.

  3. I love honeysuckle and had a huge lovely fragrant one in my last house. But that was a big garden and could take it - they can be a bit rampant and i have trying to take over the roses in my tiny patch now, which I might have to cull if I can't get it under control! x

  4. I have a winter and summer flowering honeysuckle in the courtyard of the cottage. Mabel & Earl the Blackbirds have been nesting in there every year for the past five years and when it's in bloom the smells are just divine.

  5. I have two plants in my yard, too, but always have to take good care, that they don't take over too much space. And the blossoms smell heavenly, also for bees and butterflies.
