Saturday 23rd October

M planted the rest of the bulbs, cyclamen and pansies yesterday and they're all set to provide some winter and spring colour. We moved all the blue pots of bulbs nearer to the house so they are all in the one space for now and the troughs planted with the cyclamen are half way down the garden where the cosmos were. M also cut down the two established roses ready for whenever the fencing is replaced. We decided that power washing the patio and sorting out the grouting can wait until the spring - do one thing at a time and get the fencing sorted first. There really isn't much for her to do in the garden now so she'll be back one more time to cut back the perennials in the centre bed and remove the rest of the annuals. We haven't set a date but left it that I'll contact her when I want it done. She likes the cold even less than me so, now temperatures are dropping, she's ready to hibernate!

I tuned in for the start of the nutrition club while M was here, so heard the announcement that they were starting a pilot scheme for healthy eating and weight loss and would be asking for volunteers - an email would go out to all members at 1pm and the first 20 to respond would be invited to join the pilot scheme. Well, the exciting news is that I am one of the lucky 20 - I may have been huddled over the computer at 1pm waiting for the email 😂.

Anyway I only have a vague idea of what is involved. I know that there is an introductory session next week and that it is a 30 day programme running during November. I'm assuming that in these 30 days we'll learn techniques, receive advice, and start creating the lifestyle habits needed for a successful weight loss journey. The plus points for me is that it is free (which hints that it may be chargeable in the future) and is run by three professionals. Claudia will deal with nutrition, Anna will deal with lifestyle changes and goal setting, and there will be 2 personal training classes each week though I'm not sure who will be leading those. The three professionals will provide daily support via a closed Facebook group and live online classes, and I'm hopeful that it is really going to help me kick start my weight loss.

On to today and there is nothing in the diary but I do need to take some 'autumn' photos for my monthly photo challenge. The forecast promises an overcast day, so not the best for light but I'll see what I can do.

  1. Hibernation sounds a wonderful idea :) Well done on being chosen for the pilot scheme and it should be a good help in losing weight, free is good too. I'm hoping for a fine weekend as I have a friend visiting my neck of the woods and she takes some brilliant photos so fingers crossed for her and for you too of course.

    1. Yes, I think M has the right idea as far as hibernation goes!

The pilot scheme will be interesting and I'm hoping it will help me learn how to get my weight under control. I'll be interested to see how much they eventually charge for it.

Thanks, but I've changed my plans and have decided on a quiet time at home catching up on the TV shows I missed during the week.

  2. A word of caution. Be careful of exercising via Zoom if you aren't used to doing so. Most leisure centres run exercise classes suited to lifestyle, health and weight and have good classes for the less mobile , those with health issues and the elderly. They are Covid safe and offer competitive reduced rates.

    1. I'm interesting in hearing why you advise caution with exercise classes via Zoom, please? In this case I'm not looking to join an exercise class but the Zoom personal training is a requirement of the pilot scheme so I'll have to do it if I want to take part in the scheme.

Once the scheme is completed, joining a public exercise group isn't something I'd consider. Gyms and leisure centres are classed as medium risk activities for Covid along with using public transport and socialising inside pubs and restaurants, all of which are way outside of my comfort zone. I think that activities are only Covid safe if everyone follows the rules in all aspects of their lives and that's something you can't ever be sure of when mixing with strangers.

    2. It is often quite difficult to look at the instructor on the screen whilst attempting to do the exercises!
I speak from experience having regularly exercised for the majority of my life both in 'real life' and on screen. It's always better to have an instructor in the same room to correct posture and make sure you are not in danger of damaging yourself especially if you have never done the exercise before. Yes, certainly gyms and leisure centres are classed as medium risk and quite right to only do whatever you are comfortable with however those who returned to classes/gymns as soon as they were allowed felt, as many office workers do, that the experience of being with people instead of in front of a screen was wonderful and a tonic in itself.

    3. Thanks for responding but I think we'll have to agree to differ on this one. I can honestly say that I've never had any problems with seeing and following the instructor on screen and in my experience, during live sessions he/she is able to correct any issues that become apparent. My own experience of 'real life' exercise classes etc. have not been that positive but I'm glad that your own experience has been a different one.

  3. Congratulations on being selected for the pilot program! That's wonderful, especially since it is free! It sounds like you will have a lot of personal support, too, which will be good.

Hibernating for the winter sounds good! You and M have the garden well under control and a break over winter should be nice. :)

Hope you have a restful rest of the day, Eileen. Enjoy watching your TV programs!

    1. Thanks Bless. I should get more details tomorrow. At the moment I'm not sure whether this is a 30 day programme or whether it is a trial for a programme that will be ongoing. Either way it's a great opportunity to have the promised level of support from three qualified professionals and I will do my best to get the most I can from the experience.

The garden still looks good, though a bit barren in places now the two big roses have been cut back. M has definitely earned her rest!

I've just realised that the Harry Potter films are being shown again ... I watched them not long ago though so don't know whether to rewatch them but bet I do! 😂😂
