Friday

M will be here later this morning to see to the garden. There are new plants to deal with but they are all destined for spaces against the fence and I don't have a date for replacing the fence, so I will leave it to M to decide what to do with them in the meantime.

The style class was about working out whether our clothes represent our personalities and current lifestyle, so deciding whether we are being ourselves or copying someone else's style, and whether we have the right clothes for the things we do. We started by looking at our waking hours and listing our regular activities and deciding on the four or five that accounted for most of our time and where you need to dress appropriately, e.g. socialising, work, exercising at gym, walking, etc. From there consider your wardrobe and decide whether your current clothes are an accurate reflection of your personality and your current lifestyle. Mine isn't, but I knew that and it's the reason I am doing this course! If your answer is 'no', the next step is to work out why - what is stopping you from dressing the way you want to dress? Apparently the most common reasons are worrying what other people may think and worry whether you are dressing appropriately for your age.

We then chatted about 'timeless' items (classic, essential pieces, that never look dated or go out of trend) and 'ageless' items (pieces that suit every age group). The challenge is to take a closer look at our own clothes and identify the pieces that are 'timeless' and/or 'ageless' and the pieces that are not! Also are there pieces in your wardrobe that don't fit in with your current lifestyle?

In the nutrition class this afternoon we'll start looking at joint health. I've been looking forward to this one for ages and am hoping there are some tips for things I can do through nutrition to ease the joint pain ... fingers crossed!

My September decluttering challenge:

  • 1st = 2 stained storage boxes (to be recycled)
  • 2nd = a band fleece (only worn once so returning it to the band as I will never wear it again)
  • 3rd = 3 sci-fi books (gifting to L)

  1. I think I'd find that clothes challenge so difficult. Mine is all very random, I think, and quite boring in the main. :-) xx

    1. I find this sort of thing interesting but I admit that I'm not bothered about whether my clothes are timeless or ageless. I'm waiting for the sessions on what to wear to make the most of your body shape as I've struggled for years to know what suits me after putting on so much weight.

  2. I have to say I dress the way I want to and don't worry what other people think and I probably don't dress appropriate for my age. I looked at your link in a previous post and knew straightaway my style was natural. I could do with decluttering my wardrobe and I'm pleased you're listing your items for your September challenge, I do find it inspiring. Hopefully M will come up with perfect solution for your new plants.

    1. I don't worry about what people think either, although I have one friend who is very vocal about what I wear and not in a good way!

Even without doing this challenge I know that I don't have the right clothes for my current lifestyle and that for certain activities like photo walks I'd be more comfortable wearing trousers/jeans and trainers .... but I don't have any!

M's texted to say she's on her way so the plants will get some attention today!

Are you doing in with the one item a day decluttering challenge?

    2. I'm afraid I'm not doing the item a day challenge but looking around at what cam go, I'm not very good with the actual parting of things. I rarely wear skirts or dresses and live in trousers but I don't wear jeans. I wear soft shoes or trainers because as you say really practical for walking. I'm afraid I would be upset to have a friend who criticises my dress sense.

    3. I've been upset by her attitude. I did give her the benefit of the doubt for ages but I think she knows how she's behaving and am putting a stop to it ... she doesn't like to be challenged so doesn't give her opinions if you insist that she justifies her statements!

  3. A lot of my current wardrobe has been gleanings from my sister's closet clean out - our styles are not the same! Thanks gain for sharing the Style Coach info. I am sure you'll pick up some useful tidbits about joint health. Knees seem to be a current topic in my friend conversations. Happy weekend.

    1. That's quite often the problem when you have clothes passed on from someone with completely different styles from your own. Thankfully that's a problem I don't have!

The joint health session continues next week. So far it's interesting but I haven't picked up any useful tips I can implement straight away. One supplement was mentioned which may prove useful but I will need to speak to my GP first because of the medication I take. She did explain and emphasis the role that adequate movement and exercise plays in bone and joint health which I'm not sure I fully understood before so there is plenty of scope for gradually increasing that aspect of life.

  4. Hi Eileen, I hope that M has been to tend to the garden and has figured out what to do with the new plants!
Thank you for sharing the style class information. I find it very interesting and thought provoking. I need to think on it a bit - what is my current lifestyle? I am retired and I spend the majority of my time at home, especially now! I, too, get quite a few clothing items when family members declutter their closets! Just this morning, cousin P gave me a dress and a blouse (she was decluttering her closet). My daughter took the dress and I got the blouse. :) Some of my clothes are truly timeless (saris); I am not sure about ageless - my mother used to say I dressed like an old lady! :D
Hope the nutrition class was helpful with dealing with joint pains through good nutrition.

    1. Yes, M sorted all the new plants. We're now in a bit of a limbo with the garden until the fence is replaced so I'm hoping that'll be done quickly.

I also need to decide what my lifestyle actually is now I'm retired. I wouldn't be spending as much time at home as I do if we didn't have Covid to deal with but it's hard to know what the future will be like.

I'm finding it hard to assess timeless and ageless with my clothes. I thought I understood the difference between the two but am not sure that I do so will ask for clarification at the next class.

The joint health nutrition carries on next week but so far there's only been mention of a supplement that may be useful in my case. I'd need to check with the doctor though, so nothing I can do immediately.
