Thursday keeping creeping up on me and I never seem to be ready for Mary-Lou's 'Take Three Thursday', where we are invited to show three photos linked by a common theme.
I've had a look back through my recent photos and have found a set of three to share. They were taken at the Bishops Palace in Wells where the swans have been trained to ring a bell when they want to be fed.

It's definitely a tourist attraction with a fair sized crowd waiting for the swans to ring the bell. They've been shown a few times over the years in the final (amusing/novelty) slot at the end of the local news.

ReplyDeleteNot been to the Bishops Palace Garden in almost 50 years! We went when our elder son was a baby and he'll be 49 this September. We have been to Wells since then, but the gardens were closed on each occasion. We did see the pavement marked out, though, with Mary Bignall Rand's amazing long jump which won her the Olympic/World championship.

I saw the Mary Rand long jump but couldn't get a decent photo because the place was packed with market stalls. It's on the list to photograph next time I visit Wells.
DeleteI Googled this and I thought I was right but didn't like to say, but it was at the Tokyo Olympics which were on while we were on our honeymoon (well, three days, which is hardly a long honeymoon is it?) in October 1964, when Lyn Davies also won the men's long jump, and I think Anne Packer won one of the running events. I think the jump was for 22ft, 2 and a half inches which she held for 4 years. An amazing jump when you see it marked out on the pavement.

DeleteI love seeing swans. There are only a couple places in our area where they live. Ringing a bell to be fed is quite a feat! Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteSwans are quite common around this area. There is a breeding pair on the canal about 5 minutes walk away, and evety local town seems to have at least one or two pairs.
