Friday 12th August

224/365: shadows on the patio

I don't want to tempt fate so nobody is to say this out loud ... whispering ... I'm happy to report that everything Blogger related seems to be working properly again.

I can't believe it's Friday already. This week has just whizzed by and I really haven't done very much at all. I think next week will be the same. I was supposed to be going on a trip to Sudeley Castle but have cancelled because of the heat ... I won't cope well with walking around the grounds with the temperatures we've been having, so will rearrange it for when the cooler weather returns and the same for a trip to Bristol I had pencilled in. Being at home in a cool room with the fan going full blast is the only place to be at the moment.

My gas and electric contracts end in a couple of months so I now have to choose from the various options available to me. I was on a fixed price contract so haven't been hit by any rising prices yet but looking at the options was a bit of a shock and I will need to review my budget. There was also a mention on the news that some providers may increase direct debit payments before the actual price rises to try to make it easier for people to manage so I will need to take that into account as well. That's today's task, deciding on the gas and electric contract and reviewing my budget.

I'll be catching up with friends this afternoon. L&P have arranged a Zoom session which I'm looking forward to. It'll be good to 'see' everybody as it's been a while since we've all been able to meet at the same time ... thank goodness for school holidays so the teachers among us can make it as well!

  1. Very wise not to go out when you know you won't come well with the heat. There will be another time, for sure.
Have a lovely Zoom time this afternoon and good luck with the contracts.

    1. Thanks Joy. I'm really looking forward to seeing them all this afternoon. Not looking forward to deciding on the gas and electricity contracts quite as much though!

I wouldn't have enjoyed the trips if I had gone so am quite happy to wait until the cooler weather returns. xx

  2. It's best to stay at home in this heat. Our garden gets plenty of shade but even then I had to go indoors and put the fan on. What a worry with the gas and electric prices going up so much, I don't know how people are going to manage, I hope you can adjust your budget to accommodate the price rises. Enjoy your Zoom meeting today xx

    1. My garden has some shade in the morning but it's full sun in the afternoon. It was even hot in the shade yesterday wasn't it?

Gas and electricity costs are a worry but we're all in the same position and I will be able to manage. It will just mean that I have to make savings in other areas.

I'm looking forward to this afternoon's meeting ... it looks like everyone has confirmed so we'll all be together ... a rare occurrence lately. xx

  3. Glad that you are able to post, again, Eileen. Very wise decision to stay home and be cool; walking around in the heat is not fun! Hope your Zoom meeting goes well and everyone will be able to attend. :)

    1. Thanks Bless. Fingers are crossed but it looks like Kate has been able to sort my computer issues and access to blogs should be straightforward from now on.

I don't enjoy the heat at all. Roll on Monday when the forecast is for a thunderstorm!

Everyone has confirmed for this afternoon so it should be good fun. xx

  4. Interesting photo of the shadows on the patio pavers. Interesting how the light is seemingly changing so quickly these days. We are thankfully experiencing some cooler weather & what a difference in energy levels it brings. We are also seeing a little lowering of prices on gas (for vehicles) which means that some have driving holidays back on the schedule. I hope you have a full screen Zoom meeting, meaning all participants are there, for a good catch up with everyone :)

    1. I love the changes of light, especially during the golden hour.

I think our weather is supposed to break on Monday, which cannot come quickly enough for me. I'm not sure what's happening with fuel prices over here as I use my car infrequently now.

Thanks Mary-Lou. It looks like everyone can make the Zoom session so it should be a good afternoon.

  5. I think that unless you are really good with heat, staying in with the curtains closed is a good idea at the moment. The whole energy thing is going to hit a lot of people very hard. I'm looking around for ways to save energy already and I'm much stricter about lights being turned off.

    1. I've set up a DIY air cooler this afternoon - bottles of frozen water in front of the fan. I was dubious but it actually works.

I'm doing the same as you and looking for where I can make savings but I 'm already economising where I can so I don't see much scope really.
