241/365: cosmos

There's nothing in the diary for today, which I'm quite relieved about. I felt a bit strange yesterday and have woken today feeling much the same ... not ill, just very sleepy and completely lacking in energy, so a relaxing day will do me good.

I mentioned in a comment to Joy that if feels like the start of a new year. My brain still works in academic years from all those years of teaching, so September always feels like a new start. The school year starts on Thursday but I don't know if the local school is back then or will have a designated teacher development day instead. I do like to watch the stream of junior school children on their way to school at the start of the new year ... it's easy to tell by their body language just how they are feeling about the end of the holidays, mostly happy but there'll be a few dragging their feet and looking like the world has come to an end! Unusually, Miss H isn't looking forward to school this year but that's really to do with all the worries that come with starting at senior school and I'm sure she'll be fine once she gets there.

Personal training is back in the schedule from tomorrow and I need to make arrangements about restarting the piano lessons, though will leave it for this week as I've let the practicing slide and need to get my act together on that! I also received some emails over the weekend about starting back at groups I used to go to. One was the book group I used to go to before I organised my own book group, which I have also given up, but I won't be going back to it as I'm enjoying making my own choices and reading without the pressure of finishing the book in time for the meeting. I also heard from a photography group I used to belong to, which went online during lockdowns and is now resuming in person meetings. I haven't decided on this one ... it was always a bit cliquey but there's a possibility that it may be different now. The last one was from the choir I used to go to on a Monday night and again, I'm not sure whether to restart or not. I haven't missed it as much as I thought I would and have since heard of other local choirs that sing in four parts which is what I prefer, so I have other options if I decide against it. It's nice to have choices though, isn't it and it will be nice to add a couple more regular social activities to the diary ... I like having things to look forward to!

  1. Your cosmos is lovely. I just checked online and the the new term starts here on Monday 5th September. When I was working I was always glad when the children returned to school. You have plenty of options and things to look forward to in the coming months..

    1. The cosmos has been lovely this year and it's just about holding on. I think lots of parents look forward to the start of the new school year! I always had mixed feelings about the first day of term partly because it was that start of the busiest term musically with harvest festivals and the Christmas music.

I've spent some time today looking at what's going on in the area and there's more than I expected... I just have to choose now.

  2. Lockdown gave a great opportunity to re-evaluate ones life and to decided what could stay and what could go, wasn't it? Options are always a good thing. xx

    1. Yes it did. I think I am missing the choir and being part of a photography group so am looking to see what's available locally. xx

  3. I do hope that a rest day brings back your ooph & get & go. Very pretty Cosmo - my 2nd clump of self seeded Cosmos are coming up in a bi colour stripe of pink & white. Lots of choice about group gatherings & I agree with Joy, the lockdowns gave us all an opportunity to pick & choose what we found important, missed & what to get back to. My ladies bible study group starts in mid-September with only an in-person option this time. Not sure I'm ready to gather indoors in groups yet especially since the windows will most likely be closed & no one seems to be wearing a mask indoors anymore. I'm another one that feels that new year begins in September.

    1. I've been feeling better as the day progresses thanks. I quite like the striped cosmos now I have them but wasn't sure to start with ... they've grown on me!

There seems to be plenty of choice locally for choirs and photography groups so I've drawn up a short list ... that's as far as I've got so far.

  4. Hope you're OK. I also felt strange/thick-headed yesterday. I thought it was because I had been sleeping badly for a fortnight and had finally had a good night's rest, and needed more. I forced myself to stay awake all day, then come the evening, couldn't drop off. I wondered whether it was Covid fatigue but I tested negative on Saturday and didn't really want to waste another test so soon, when I'm not going anywhere anyway. It will be interesting to see what you decide to re-join or not come the new term. Glad I'm not the only one thinking that actually there are some things/people I don't miss from the old life ... in my case I just have to make sure I replace old activities with at least some new otherwise I am much too inclined to bury my head!

    1. I'm feeling much better now thanks. I also did a Covid test last night which thankfully was negative. I didn't think it would be the dreaded virus but we have family birthdays this week so I needed to be sure.

I don't plan to re-join any of the groups I used to go to and have no wish to be part of a book group again, at least for now. I would like to join an SATB choir and also find a photography group that isn't focused on competitions. I've found a couple of possibilities for both so the next step is to try out each one and see which I prefer. I'm the same as you and know I need to replace some of my old activities with something new. I hope you are successful in sorting yours out. Great news that your Covid test was negative.

  5. Do you miss teaching, Eileen?

On the first day of the semester, one of my colleagues was saying how much she wanted to retire. I don't feel like that yet, but I sometimes wonder if I'd miss teaching after retiring.

    1. I do miss the actual teaching and seeing the progress the children make, but I don't miss all the school politics or the attitude of some of the parents. I was ready to retire when I did and if took quite a while for me to adjust, but I'm happy with my decision now.

  6. Glad to read in your responses to comments that you have felt better as the day went on. Maybe you just needed a day of rest.
Sounds like you have quite a few options when it comes to activities. :) I am choosing to continue to isolate. :)

    1. I must have been overtired but I can't think why. The rest sorted me out though and I am feeling fine now.

There's plenty of choices for activities but they are mostly evening ones and I'd really like to find something for one of the days so I'll see how I get on. I think your case numbers are a lot higher than ours so can understand why you continue to isolate. xx

  8. You are a whirlwind! I always feel that September is the start of the year for me, and I always am energised in September and October. Perhaps it's the freshness after hot summer weather.
