The August Garden

232/365: the view from the living room

It's still looking colourful after the recent heatwave though a lot of the pots don't bear close inspection. The sorry looking pot of cosmos plants has been moved to the left hand side by the wooden planters as it's become home to an ant's nest and we wanted to isolate it from the pots containing perennials. The burgundy clematis (seen on the right hand side of the photo) really struggled in the heat and I think it's given up flowering for this year, as has the deep pink gaura to the left of it.

The pots of perennial nemesia (bottom right hand corner of the photo above) have got really leggy and need to be cut back next time M is here. The new clematis (on the first trellis) is doing well but I'm unlikely to see any flowers this year.

The centre bed (above) is just starting to look a bit raggedy. The cosmos were frazzled by the heat and haven't fully recovered, not helped by the fact that a lot of deadheading is needed (tomorrow's job!). The gladioli are over for the year as are the pink salvia and the pink penstemon. Over by the fence, the hydrangea probably won't finish it's flowering cycle this year - the flowers change from white, to pink, to red, but it's been scorched and has started dropping its petals.

The view from the far side of the centre bed (above) to show the trellis that's not really visible in other photos.  The new potato vine on the left hand trellis is growing nicely and has started to flower and the jasmine (below the hanging basket) seems to have liked the heat and had a bit of a growth spurt.

Looking back to the house (below), the crocosmia are almost over for the year and their leaves are yellowing. All of the hanging baskets are holding on but have all been affected by the excessive heat ... I'm hoping they'll make a come back!

And finally, below is the view from the bedroom window.

  2. Your garden is still quite colorful and beautiful! I'm sorry the heatwave caused so much damage, but, hopefully, the plants will recover and put on a show in autumn!

    1. Normally I 'd expect the colour to last through September as well but am not sure whether that will happen this year as lots of the annual in pots have been scorched during the heatwave. There are signs of autumn already... the tree in my neighbour's garden is starting to display it's autumn colours a month earlier than usual and I can see the same on some of the trees that line the paths across this end of the village.

  3. Oh the view from the bedroom window really shows how spacious your garden is. Lovely. Yes, our meager (compared to yours) pots are showing a bit of end of season fatigue too, but we have much less variety and have gone to geraniums and other species that we know thrive in the heat and need less watering. We have been gone a lot lately, so they've had to do with less watering. I do hope a break in the weather is just the respite your plants needs.

    1. Thanks Susanne, I think I'll be trying a different selection next year, doing the same as you and choosing ones that are better able to cope with the heat and reduced watering.

  4. It still looks sharp, and plenty of colour - though I know what you mean about how tired some of the plants are beginning to look. At least you don't have to survey a crispy, beige lawn! Your clematis looks excellent compared with mine, whose leaves burned dark brown in the first heatwave. And don't forget a lot of your plants are only a year or two old, so still have time to get properly established and put down deeper roots.

    1. Thanks Lady E, I take it that your lawn is a lovely shade of beige now ... my dislike of lawn care is the main reason I opted for a stone patio so thankfully I don't have that to worry about.

The clematis did well and is recovering some green leaves. I was also surprised by two new buds as well, so it's doing just fine. The new clematis didn't seem to be bothered by the heat at all.

Yes, most of my plants are still young. We'll see what next year brings!

    1. Thanks Celie, it's doing well. Lots of pink and white at the moment with some red but next year I'll add in some deep purple as well.

    1. Thanks Chris. The pavers are my best investment as far as the garden is concerned.
