A Day for Celebrations

Slightly delayed but yesterday was spent celebrating a huge event in friend L's life ... the safe delivery of her first granddaughter who was born a few days ago. It's wonderful news and I know just how excited she is.

We continued with our plan to try a new place to eat every month and this time tried out The Three Magpies at Seend. One of L's friends had eaten there recently and commented on how much they had enjoyed the food so we agreed to give it a try.

We rarely have starters and this time we both chose the same meal from the Special's Board ... homemade chicken and leek pie with mixed greens and mashed potato (it looks like a huge portion of mashed potato in the photo below but it's to do with the camera angle and it wasn't really that big!). It was delicious and the homemade pastry was the tastiest I've had for a long time. Definitely a tick in the box for this course!

We did give in and sample the dessert menu as well ... banoffee waffle for me and a summer fruits pavlova for L. I don't know why we still pretend that we'll go without dessert because we always have one! Both desserts were lovely although L wasn't too impressed about having ice cream with her pavlova so that ended up on my plate and she had my cream instead!

The afternoon was slightly spoiled by one of the other customers who brought his dog into the pub. I don't have a problem with dogs in pubs if they are well trained and well behaved but unfortunately this one wasn't and proceeded to bark loudly at anyone and everyone. It really ruined the afternoon so we decided to leave and get a coffee somewhere else. However as we were paying we were asked if we'd enjoyed the meal and we both said that we'd loved the food but were leaving early because the noise the dog was making made conversation impossible and they offered us complementary coffees and a seat in the restaurant area well away from the dog as compensation. We accepted their offer and both thought it was kind of them ... the service generally couldn't be faulted and we did see the manager talk to the dog owner as we settled ourselves in the restaurant and he stopped his dog barking straight away, so we spend the remaining part of the afternoon having a long chat and catching up with all the baby news.

It was a lovely day. I always enjoy L's company and baby pics are always a joy to look at. I have nothing planned now until Monday so will have some quiet days at home. I've just started reading A Conspiracy of Bones by Kathy Reichs so will carry on with that and I also want to make some progress on my granny square blanket before next week's Creative Yarn group meets for the second session. I started it but didn't touch it at all when I was poorly so it'll be something relaxing to do. I have some TV programmes to catch up with but definitely have not reached the stage where I can crochet and watch TV at the same time ... I feel that achievement is a long way in my future!

  1. Congratulations to L on the birth of her granddaughter. Your meals look nice and it was good of the manager to offer you complimentary coffees and have a word with the owner to silence the dog. Enjoy your weekend with your book, crochet and TV programmes xx

  2. Sounds like a wonderful meal out and it's too bad that the owner of the dog didn't quieten the dog's barking, earlier! Your meal and the desserts look delicious, although that pavlova looks a bit like a snowman! Now I am wanting pot pies and waffles and pavlovas! LOL.

    1. Yes, it would have been better if the owner had been a bit more considerate and attempted to keep his dog from barking. The food was very tasty though and we will probably return for a meal at some stage. It does look a little like a snowman doesn't it? Go for it ... I can recommend pot pies and waffles, and I'm sure L will recommend the pavlova! xx

  4. Lovely meal! I am pleased that you are well enough again to enjoy a good meal out. As for the dog! Why are dogs taken to a restaurant? I quite like dogs, at a distance and not barking their stupid heads off.

    1. Thanks Carole. To be fair at that stage we were sitting in one of the booths in the bar and not in the restaurant but even if I'd just been in there for a drink I would have been annoyed by the noise the dog was making. xx

  5. Your meal looks very tasty, L's pavlova looks a little like a snow person. A barking dog would be most annoying inside the pub/restaurant. This side of the pond, dogs, other than service dogs, most places do not allow. I wonder why it took the manager talking to the owner to bring the barking to his attention? I often find it is not the dogs, but the owners that are most annoying. Congratulations to L on the birth of her first Granddaughter.

    1. The owner of the dog is a boat dweller so it could be that the dog isn't used to so many people being around. I don't understand why the owner wasn't stopping him though. We were in a pub and it's quite common for dogs to be allowed inside pubs although this is the first time I've been bothered by the behaviour of one of the dogs. Usually you don't really know they are there and any owners who can't or don't control their animal is asked to leave. I don't know why it was different in this pub. I'll pass your congratulations on to L. xx

  6. Those meals look delicious!

It's frustrating when you see dogs behaving badly. I usually blame the owner, to be honest. If the dog is anxious or noisy in a pub, surely it's kinder to the dog to not take it there in the first place!

I'm glad that you had a good day.

    1. Thanks Lyssa and I can assure you that the meals were delicious!

I agree that it's usually down to the owner. This one made no attempt to quieten his dog ... maybe his solitary life on his boat means he has forgotten how to consider the impact on other people. xx

  7. Congratulations to L on the birth of her granddaughter! That's irritating about the dog. I don't understand how some people don't take into consideration anybody else! I'm glad the place offered a solution.

    1. I'll pass your congratulation on to L, thanks. It didn't completely ruin the afternoon but it was inconsiderate of the owner and really of the management that they didn't deal with it quicker. They responded well to our criticism but maybe it wouldn't have come to that if they'd had a quiet work with the owner sooner. xx
