Personal Training & Crochet

where I have my personal training session

Yesterday was a slow and steady day, and to be honest I didn't get much done. I had my personal training session which was focused on upper body and arms as my left knee was painful. Amy's baby is due at the beginning of April which means that these sessions will have to stop for a while so we started working out a plan for what I can do at home until she is able to resume the sessions. She's planning to work right up to her due date and only take a few weeks off after the birth, but you never can tell how things will work out can you? I get on well with her and really enjoy the sessions so won't be looking to find another trainer unless Amy says that she is stopping for good, which isn't likely to happen.

I did my piano practice when I got back and then started watching crocheting videos on YouTube so that was the end of my productivity for the day! Marlene @ Poppy Patchwork recommended the Bella Coco videos so I watched a few of them, liked how she explains things so watched her video on making a granny square. I was more than happy to see that I had been doing it right so I unpicked the work I'd done so far and had another go, trying to maintain a more even tension ... I think it looks better this time. So, over confidence rules and I've decided I am ready to attempt my first granny square project and will make a giant granny square lap blanket as soon as I can get the wool. Which is my next problem ... having to work out how much wool I need. I was going to order online but bottled it and will buy from the local wool shop where they know what they are doing, are used to dealing with the bewildered, and will be able to work out quantities for me. I'm waiting for a parcel to be delivered today so will go into town as soon as that arrives.

I suppose that means that as soon as I get the wool I won't want to tackle any of the boring household chores that are waiting for me, but I can always catch up with things once the novelty wears off!

  1. I hope Amy manages to resume the personal training sessions after her baby is born. I'm looking forward to seeing how your crochet blanket progresses, once you start you won't want to put it down I promise :-) xx

    1. I do too and I'm sure she will if there are no complications with the birth or the baby.

I hoping the crochet turns out to be a hobby I can pick up in the evenings and maybe even get to the stage where I can watch the TV at the same time ... don't know if that's being ambitious though! xx

  2. Garage conversions can be so very useful, can't they? Such a useful space and if mine had been part of my house, I probably would have converted it by now.
You're doing so well with the crochet. Making a lap blanket sounds 'big' but, really, it is the same thing over and over and over again which will really help you to develop the technique and become more fluent.
All the best to Amy and, knowing my own trainer, I expect that is exactly what will happen!
    xx

    1. Yes they can and she has a lovely training space in hers. If I remember I'll photograph the other end next week. My own garage is separate from the house so have the same problem, although I have plans bubbling away to make one end into a photo studio when and if I can afford it.

I think the lap blanket is something I can do and be able to make a reasonable job of. I didn't get the wool today ... still waiting for my parcel to arrive, so hopefully will get started tomorrow.

I'll pass on your best wishes to Amy. xx

  3. That's good that you can work on your upper body and arms until your knee gets better. I'm sure it felt good to know that you are doing the crocheting correctly. Have fun at the yarn shop and enjoy the time spent crocheting. The housework will wait! :D

    1. My arms feel like they're made of jelly today!

I'm pleased to have reached the stage where I feel competent enough to attempt a blanket. I'm still stuck at home waiting for the parcel to be delivered so the wool shopping will have to wait till tomorrow now. I didn't do the housework though .... like you said, it can wait!! xx

  4. I'm glad you found the video's helpful, the joy of making a big granny square blanket, is to use whatever colour you want, so purchase a few balls, and if you need more just choose another colour and keep going.

    1. Her videos are very good aren't they. I'm going to try to recreate a granny square blanket I had as a child which had rounds of alternating shades of pink. I like your suggestion and will try that afterwards. xx

  5. That feel of crocheting confidence is encouraging for you. I chucked at your comment that shopping in person at the wool shop in town because they are "use to dealing with the bewildered" ... I immediately saw in my mind a shop for all sorts of bewildered problems being sorted with granny like ladies in a shop, sorting out not just wool problems but all manner of life problems ... oh if it was only so easy. :)

    1. If only, but I'm only looking for advice on wool so I should be okay. It's going to be shades of pink, that's the plan but will obviously depend on what they have in stock. xx
