What The Doctor Said!

272/365: guara

I don't know what happened to my scheduled post for today so I have deleted it and am starting again.

Today's news is all about my hospital appointment ... some good, some worrying, but overall a better result than I was expecting. I was convinced I would hear that I had cancer in my left eye but that's not the case ... breathes huge sigh of relief. However, something isn't right as the freckle/mole on the back of my eyeball has grown, which is a bad sign. The doctor has referred me to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London as this is one of the four hospitals in the UK that specialises in moles in eyeballs. He stressed that the referral is not because he thinks it may be cancer but because it is quite a rare condition so it is better that the specialists deal with it, but that it may be they decide they don't need to see me once they have reviewed all the photos, scans, and ultrasounds that were taken today. I was seen today as an outpatient but he has transferred me to the something something Eye Clinic for two monthly check-ups from now on ... that's at Bath.

So it hasn't completely set my mind at rest but there's no immediate concern. The biggest worry is that it is now definitely classed as a mole and it has grown, almost doubling in size in two years, which wasn't expected to happen but I don't have any other symptoms so I am planning to stay positive. I'm now back in the system so I have the reassurance of knowing that my eye health is going to be monitored carefully.

  1. Thank goodness your news wasn't the worst case scenario and you are in good hands now and they can keep an eye on your eye, well you know what I mean xx
I was really puzzled why I couldn't access your other blog post this morning but it's all okay again now.

    1. Thanks Eileen xx. Saying I'm relieved is an understatement. I'm in the best possible position now as I'll be monitored carefully and hopefully it'll never develop into cancer.

I'm glad you've been able to read my replacement post. I don't think I can cope with any more Blogger problems!

  4. I, too, couldn't access your earlier post, but, I am glad I can access this newer post.
That's good to know that the mole is not cancerous, but, I'm glad that you have been referred to the specialists and you will be regularly monitored to make sure everything is as it should be. It sounds like you are being well taken care of and that is very good news. :)

    1. The issue with the first post is odd but at least all subsequent posts seem to have published properly.

Thanks Bless, it's been good news all round. I'm obviously relieved there is currently no sign of cancer and the referral to the specialists is more than I was expecting. I'm hoping they will want to see me as that's the best as far as I'm concerned but at least I know I will continue to be monitored regularly for now.

  5. Sending good thoughts your way. It must be worrying. I hope, once they see the scans and things, they will decide they don't have to see you.

    1. Thanks Sharon. I'm hoping the specialist will want to see me just because I'd prefer to me examined by a doctor who regularly sees this type of condition.

  6. What a relief!

If you need to come to London, you can stay with me, if you like. You'd have to get the train into London and perhaps that wouldn't work for you but the offer is there. xx

    1. Oh thanks Joy. It'll all depend on timings etc., but it's a really kind offer and I may take you up on it. xx

  7. Well, the non-specialists are right to refer you on, and perhaps the doctor who has probably seen this condition much more can set your mind even more at rest. It is always better to know than not to know, because it is not good to jump to dour conclusions. I stopped and said a little prayer for you that all shall be well.

    1. Thanks Susanne. Being seen by the specialists is my best option and the more information I can get, the better, although I am avoiding Google! x

    1. Thanks Mary-Lou. They are the specialist for all things relating to the eye. A mole on the back of the eyeball is apparently quite a rare thing so - my optometrist called his trainee optometrists in to have a look at my eye because it's so unusual for them to see one!

  10. I do apologise for missing this. Have just scrolled back now after today's post. There were a couple of days last week where I kept getting a "There is nothing here" message from your blog so perhaps that is how I missed it. I'm glad that there is no real cause for concern, and I know that Moorfields is the place to be. Most of the consultants are kind, and they have an army of lovely volunteers to look after patients and help them around the hospital, chat etc. Just take something to do in case of a long wait! (I suppose every clinic is different but Mum has often waited 4+ hours.)

    1. I'll forgive you 😉

I'm relieved that there is currently no sign of cancer but the fact that the mole is increasing in size is a concern and means that the threat of cancer at some time in the future remains. That's why I'm so pleased with the referral to Moorfields. Thanks for the info about the hospital. If they do want to see me I will go prepared for a long wait!
