Garage and Garden Update

126/365: from this to this!

And the garage reorganisation is finished! It may not look like it, but everything now has a designated place and I know where everything is. The workbench at the far end is the one S made for me and currently is the repository for the majority of the stuff that still needs to be sold but eventually will be used as the storage space for spare pots, etc. S sorted out the electrics and the lights, installing the round light on the far wall (from his "this'll be useful one day" stash!) and a cover on the socket for the freezer plug so that it can't be switched off by accident. He also fixed up two of my late partner's signs that I want to keep. The wooden shelving unit on the right holds the gardening stuff and the grey metal cabinet on the left is the storage for house and car products. The fridge is being collected on Saturday and the Belfast sink has already been sold to a reclamation yard who will collect it next time they have a lorry in the area. The patio furniture will probably be moved outside soon ... if the warmer weather is here to stay, it's time to start having breakfast on the patio again, which just leaves one more load to take to the recycling yard next week and one box for the charity shop.

Next week I'll buy a tool box to store the tools I'm keeping, and I've solved my dilemma of what to get for S as a thank you for all his hard work ... he is now the proud owner of a few of my late partner's tools. He is over the moon with all of them and it helps me to know that the tools have gone to someone who will use and appreciate them.

I've taken some photos of the heavier stuff and will place the adverts over the weekend, which just leaves the pots to be sorted out. The blue pots of spring bulbs are currently out on the patio but it's time to move them behind the garage and bring out the pots for the annuals ... the pots really shouldn't have been stacked like they have been as it has compressed the soil, so that's added another job before they can be planted up and I'm hoping that M will be able to help with that when she's next here. The pots that aren't going to be used this year also need to be emptied and cleaned, which won't take too long to do.

I placed the order for the trellis planters yesterday; R (who installed the new fencing) is sorting it all out for me and will also deliver, hopefully either tonight or tomorrow morning. They can't be planted up until S builds his pergola type structure to stabilise them, but at least they will be here ... I wanted to get them ordered as most places seem to be out of stock and I'm wondering if they may be a discontinued model. S showed me his plans for the pergola structure and it's very similar to what I've been imagining so, with a bit of tweaking that has the green light although we haven't agreed a date for completing it yet.

The only other thing needed for outdoors is to sort out a washing line so I can reduce my use of the tumble drier. I'm thinking of getting a folding, wall mounted line like this one, but not necessarily that particular make.

The next stage for the garden is the summer planting. The hanging baskets are due by mid May, and I need to get my act together and decide on which plants I want for the summer colour. I'll definitely be getting cosmos again but am still dithering about the other choices! M had given the go ahead to buy the plants so there'll be a shopping trip (or two!) next week.

  1. Breakfast on the patio. Doesn't that sound wonderful!

The garage looks extremely organised and tidy - well done. And I've never seen a wall mounted line - such a clever idea.

    1. It's a lovely, peaceful start to the day and it look forward to breakfast outside every summer. I don't often eat lunch or dinner out on the patio though.

One of my friends has a wall mounted washing line, which is how I knew about it. It is clever and I think will be easier to use than a standard rotary line.

  2. I've never seen a wall mounted airer before, what a good idea. Mine is on a pole in the grass but I worry about Tilly running into it when she's doing her zoomies. Your garage looks great and you and S have done well sorting it out. How nice that you gifted tools to S and they will be used and appreciated. Wonderful that you have ordered the trellis planters they are so nice, your garden is going to look wonderful.

    1. I have a rotary line which I've never used at this house as it's too heavy to put away after use and it's not something I want out all the time. I think the wall mounted line will be perfect for my needs.

S was really pleased with the tools - I don't know why I didn't think about it before. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the website is accurate and they have the planters in stock.

  3. Woo hoo! Well done on getting your garage organized! It looks great! I'm curious - do you have a side door to access your garage from your garden or do you have to access it from the front/drive way? How lovely that you could gift S some of your late partner's tools. I am sure they will be appreciated and put into good use. :)
I like the wall mounted clothes line.
Sounds like the plans for your garden are coming along nicely, too. Enjoy shopping for your summer plants! :)

    1. Yes, there is a side door to the garage which is accessed from the patio. I'll take some more photos so you can see.

I'm glad I thought to let S have the tools. I've kept everything I'm likely to need and there's no way I would have used any of the power tools I let him have, so this way we're both happy.

M should be here on Friday so I will be buying the plants on Thursday ... should be fun!

  4. That was very thoughtful of you to gift the tools to S - as you say, now you know that he is happy & the tools will be used in a loving way. Your garage re-organization is a master plan! I have a collapsible/portable clothes dryer that I can use on the patio but I don't use often as neighbours have smoking fires at the weekend & there's no rule about time start/finish, which makes me wonder about our council's take on climate change ... I'll say no more.

    1. I suddenly occurred to me that S would appreciate the tools. I don't know why I didn't think of it before!

I have a collapsible clothes dryer that I sometimes use indoors but my rooms are on the small side so it's always in the way. Bonfires isn't an issue here as neighbours are good at sticking to the rules.
