264/365: gladiolus

Well it wasn't the best news at the opticians yesterday, but not completely awful either. My prescription has changed, worryingly a much bigger deterioration in my right eye, so I've just spent a small fortune on a new pair of glasses which should be available for collection within the next two weeks. The result of the eye health check revealed that I now have cataracts in both eyes which was a bit of a shock but, because they are thankfully in the very early stages, it's just a case of monitoring for now.

The not so good news is that I have to go back in this morning to have another examination but this time with my pupils dilated (or diluted as I keep describing it!) so the back of both eyes can be checked properly. It seems likely that I have had another PVD, which means that both eyes have been affected by this if it is confirmed, so she wants to check to make sure that the retina in both eyes hasn't been damaged. The frustrating thing is that my vision will be blurry for hours afterwards so I won't be doing much today.

  1. I'm in the same boat regarding cataracts and my optician said it could be years and years before they impact and they might never but, as you say, they need monitoring.

Good luck today - is someone going with you to help you to get home again? xx

    1. Everyone is busy, ill, or away so I'll catch the bus there and back.

As long as it's good news today, I can stop worrying. xx

  2. So sorry to hear that it wasn't all good news at the optician's and you have to have another examination, today. But, it is good to have things checked, just to make sure that there has been no retinal damage. Will someone drive you home after the eye exam if your eyes will be blurry from the dilation? For what it's worth, I've had cataracts in both eyes for a few years, now, and so far, they are not ripe enough to require surgery. Oh the joys of aging! :D

    1. I won't be able to drive so will leave the car at home and catch the bus.

My Mum used to say that old age doesn't come alone and we used to laugh ... starting to understand what she meant now 😂

  3. Oh Eileen I'm sorry you didn't have better news at your eye checkup. Glasses are so expensive aren't they, the cost of the frames is the lesser part of the cost, well it was in my case. I hope you have a good result from the examination today. Take care, please don't drive will you, I know hubby has this done for his diabetic retinopathy checkup.

I was diagnosed with early stage cataracts six years ago and my recent eye test the cataracts still do not need surgery so hopefully they take a long time to get to that stage. I think cataracts are just another symptom of getting old, it's no fun is it :)

    1. Don't worry. The car is staying at home and I'll catch the bus. Yes, the frames were the cheapest part ... couldn't believe the cost of the actual varifocal lenses!

No it's not much fun 😏 but I think I'm better off health wise than so many people so am thankful for that

  5. I hope your exam this morning went well and no other eye problems have been found. Ageing is tiring, isn't it?
