340/365: cyclamen

Yesterday's personal training was good ... hard, but good. We had a long chat about additional exercise throughout the week once it gets colder and there's a risk of slipping when I go out for my daily walk. I'd originally planned to swap my daily walks for one of the local gyms, giving me access to their treadmills, recumbent bikes and rowing machines but after looking into it I have decided not to, partly because of costs but mainly because the gym I was planning to use has all of the treadmills lined up in front of a huge window so anybody using them is on view to everyone using the retail park where the gym is located ... I'd prefer some privacy! There's one more gym I'm waiting to hear back from but Amy has suggested an alternative which is to work out an exercise plan for me at home using the bits of equipment I already have with maybe one purchase of some heavier weights. We're going to chat some more next week but I think it's the way to go.

The highlight of today is the U3A Book Group's Christmas meal which is also doubling as a belated birthday celebration for me. We were all sent the menu last night so we can order the food as soon as we get there; unfortunately it's not a good menu for me but there is one fish dish I can have and possibly one chicken dish if they'll leave off the sauce so I won't go hungry even though I don't fancy either of them at the moment! It's a friendly chatty group so the company will be good at least.

  1. As for the gym, always good to have a Plan C or D in the works. Just wondering about the treadmills in the window (which is probably for the benefit of those on the treadmill so they get a view) when standing outside can you actually see in? Many gyms here also have their bikes & treadmills at the window but the windows are the type that you see out, not in, so people on the sidewalk don't really see inside. Just a thought. I hope you enjoy the U3A meal & gathering today. Can you order several appetizers rather than the meal to make your meal? I've done that a couple of times when all the main meal choices were meat & more meat (col).

    1. The building used to be a large store so the window is a shop front. You could definitely see in from outside the last time I looked but it's always possible that they have changed that now. I'm on plan B now which I think will be a better option for me.

I enjoyed the food and the company but not the service or the temperature in the room. In the end they had some daily specials so I chose baked salmon. xx

  2. Amy's idea is good. I have a few bits and bobs at home and can work out a programme with them. Also, if necessary, Lindsey can use them to give me an online session. Very useful from time to time. xx

    1. I've chosen some weights in my price range but will see what Amy thinks before I order them. There will be a break in training sessions when she has her baby so it will be useful to have some decent weights at home. xx

  3. You've received good suggested from both Mary-Lou and Joy about the gym and working out at home. I also like the suggestion of ordering appetizers in lieu of the main meal if it isn't something you can eat or feel like eating. Hope you have a wonderful social time with the others in the book group. :)

    1. I chose a meal from the 'specials' board so had baked salmon in the end, which was lovely. We did have a lovely time even though the room was chilly and the service was slow.

  4. I hope you find a satisfactory way to get winter exercise, and share if you do. I have been thinking about rejoining the gym, mostly for the treadmills. I don't blame you for not wanting to exercise in front of the whole world. At our gym the treadmills and bikes are at the back of the largest room, and the more challenging machines up front. The classroom for group exercise is behind the last row and there is a large window in between the two spaces. But the class participants are facing in the opposite direction, and the only one who see us from behind would be the instructor, if he/she looks past 3 rows of people into the main gym. It is actually a smart set-up that make the whole place seem roomier.

    1. I'll write abut my new exercise plans in the new year. The set up at your gym sounds really good. I just didn't fancy using the treadmill in front of a huge window where everyone else can see you, so my new approach is to continue with my personal trainer and to do the rest of my weekly exercises at home.
