More Social Events and Catching Up at Home

the February read for the U3A book group ...

... and also the books series I plan to read for No.19 on my bucket list. I don't know yet whether the book group plans to read the entire series but if they're not going to read them in order, one each month, I will carry on and read them on my own.

It was the U3A monthly meeting yesterday, so a chance to catch up with everybody. The speaker was excellent with a wonderfully funny and informative presentation on 'The Wit and Songs of Noël Coward', treating us to stories of Coward's life, some of his many quotes and a few of his songs, accompanying himself on the piano.

I had a chat with the groups secretary about the possibility of me starting up a photography group and she is very keen for it to happen. It's going to be a monthly photo scavenger hunt using phone cameras, where we all have a list of 10 words to find photos for. I need to come up with a snappy name for the group to distinguish it from the other 'proper' photography group (which is still listed as a group but hasn't met for years!). Any suggestions will be very much appreciated as I can't think of anything!

I may also start up a monthly board game group and if I do, will not go to the monthly modern board game group I mentioned in yesterday's post. I'd prefer to be playing Scrabble or Rummikubs or games like that which the other group doesn't offer, so if there is enough interest I will start that off next month.

They announced that one of the other members is starting a Creative Yarns group next month. If I've understood correctly it's going to be a bit like a Knit and Natter group but people can bring any project to work on, so crochet, knitting, tapestry, embroidery, stitching etc. I had a chat with the organiser and she's quite happy to teach beginners crochet so I have added my name to the list and will be giving the group a try ... it's another monthly meeting.

I am aware that I'm getting close to overloading myself, so this is my lot for now. I will try them all and see how I get on. Everything with the U3A is a monthly thing so it's not taking up too much time in a month but I need to remember I also have things outside of the U3A that I am committed to. I'll see how it goes!

Today starts with personal training but that's the only thing in the diary for today so I will carry on with The Big Clean, focusing on the bathrooms. I also have a couple of loads of washing to do and a few bits in the kitchen ... make some bread, get creative with some vegetables, and chop up a load of onions for freezing.

  1. I'm sure your photo scavengers hunter group will be popular and enjoyable for all so why not call it something like Fun Photo Finders Group, a bit of alliteration seems to work well. You do have plenty to keep yourself occupied, that's good and plenty to look forward to.

    1. Thanks Eileen, I hope it will be. Thanks for the name suggestion ... I like the alliteration. I'm wondering now if I will be allowed to have a snappy name (even though I was told to come up with one) as none of the other groups are named in that way. It'll be interesting to see what is permitted!

I have lots in the pipeline. I doubt I will keep doing everything and some will probably die a natural death but I should end up with a good and varied selection ... enough to keep me out of mischief anyway! xx

    1. Thanks Joy. It's a shame they don't have any exercise groups ... that would be good and would be of interest to me! xx

  3. Sounds like you had a good time at the meeting, yesterday, and you are getting quite active with the U3A. Lots of social engagements which will be good fun, I think. Sounds like a busy day, today, with personal training, housework, and meal prep. Hope your day goes well!

    1. I'm enjoying the U3A. This particular branch is a nice group of people and they are very friendly. As you know I like to have plenty in the diary to look forwards to and this group offers that and is affordable.

I managed the personal training and the food prep but not the housework ... oh well, there's always another day for that! xx

  4. WOW sounds a full on schedule coming your way. I've read the first book in the series of the Seven Sisters, I really should request the 2nd book. I've got my thinking cap on about a snappy name for your scavenger photo group; your readers now on the search for a name - another fun blog scavenger hunt for us :)

    1. Yes, it's a bit full on at the moment but I think it's likely that some of the groups may not work out for me ... I soon find out won't I!

I've heard good reports about the Seven Sisters series so am hoping it lives up to expectations. Thanks re the group name. xx

  5. How nice to be a part of a book group!
I need to start reading printed books again. Lately I have been reading e-books only.

    1. I like book groups and it's a good way of meeting new people. I don't really get on with e-books although I do have a Kindle and use it occasionally. I prefer 'proper' books, most of which I get from my sister once she's finished reading them. xx

  6. What fun to have all those groups to go to! I'm not very social but they do sound fun. My mum loved that series of books. In fact, she really enjoyed all the author's books. We would have fun trying to find the ones she didn't have in the charity shops. I hope you enjoy!

    1. I'm not as social as it may sound but I know I need to make the efforts as it really improves my mental health and I feel so much better as a result of that effort.

I've heard good things about this series. I hadn't thought about looking in charity shops for them ... thanks for the idea, I will start searching for the rest of the series. xx

  7. You are going to be a busy bee. Remember organizing a group is usually much more time consuming than just participating. Enjoy the new groups, and of course, you know I think the photo hunt is a great idea.

    1. That's the plan! Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to come up with a list of prompts for each meeting but at least there won't be the faff of having to book rooms. We will be meeting in local cafes and I plan to keep to a small group so we shouldn't have problems fitting in anywhere. I'm looking forward to getting it started. xx
