17/365: cyclamen

I feel really rested after a very quiet weekend. I spent my time doing a mix of research on the family tree, some piano practice, watched quite a lot of TV and did a bit of reading.

I also gave some thought to the adventures I want to enjoy this year. This isn't just in terms of places I want to visit or people I want to spend time with, but also thinking about the new things I want to experience and things I've tried in the past that I'd like to revisit, which is how I managed to scare my sister when we spoke on the phone! I can sew anything and she can knit anything but my own knitting efforts ... well, it's best we don't mention them! However, not based on any sign of having even the lowest level of competency at knitting or crochet, I feel that it's something I will be able to do and will enjoy. Previous attempts have told me that this isn't the case ... my sister had to finish my last attempt at a crocheted blanket as well as every other attempt in the past, but ... a knitting or crochet project has made the list for 2022. She has offered to help me and, after I said that maybe a granny square blanket would be a good place to start, she has sent me a simple pattern but then she ruined it by saying that it'd be easier if I just bought the wool and gave it straight to her! I'll give her a few days to recover from the shock before I speak to her about it again!

Today is set aside for taking some photos for my monthly challenge (beginning with G), for the WPSH, and for H's year long challenge. It sounds a lot writing it out like that but if I'm lucky, some of them will be suitable for more that one challenge ... that's the plan anyway. I keep getting caught out by the shorter days and the lack of light so will make a start as soon as I've had my breakfast and done some piano practice.

I missed The Great Pottery Throw Down last night so will watch that on iPlayer this evening. I tried the online choir last week but didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped so that's on the back burner for the time being and I'll think about trying one of the other options. I'm wondering if the frustration with the online choir sessions is a sign that it's time to return to in person practices.

  1. You rally should persevere with your knitting and crochet efforts but that did make me laugh what your sister suggested :) I hope you manage to take some good photos today.

    1. I have every intention of attempting some knitting or crochet this year ... I think it should be an annual event but am not sure that her nerves are up to it! I've taken some photos today but then got side-tracked by the family tree so I've been busy with that.

  2. Can I recommend a book by Nicki Trench called "Cute and Easy Crochet" - that was the book that I found most helpful when I learned to be a booker. Her instructions made sense, and the projects are manageable. I can Crochet now - but it does not give me the same enjoyment as knitting.

    1. Thanks Angela. I'll see if it's available from the library.

  3. Your sister is funny! I think you'll be able to do a granny square blanket without any problem! Just because you couldn't finish the blanket last time doesn't mean you won't be able to finish one this time around!

Have a fun day taking the photos for your photo challenges. :)

    1. Well at least she didn't suggest that she chooses the colours that she'd prefer, which has been suggested in the past! I'll get my own back when she needs to do some sewing 😂😂

I've taken a few photos and will try again tomorrow. I've spent most of the day working on my family tree instead.

  4. Sorry but I did chuckle long & out loud about your plans for crocheting/knitting ... All of my friends knit and/or crochet beautiful things. In any of my attempts there's always blood! We've left it for the friends to make with wool & I'll make with paper (cards for them to send). Rest, redo, revisit all good words to work with this week :)

    1. You sound like me ... I knit so tight that it's almost impossible to move the wool on the needles and my finger tips get really sore. My sister can't bear to watch me!! I think my talents lie elsewhere but am determined to give it another go even if it is going to age her about ten years!

  5. I could avoid laughing when I read your conversación with your sister. In my family I am the one who likes spending time sewing, knitting or crocheting, my sister started attending a sewing workshop but I finished some of her projects! Now, whenever she wants something she asks me :D
Good luck with your granny square, don't give up trying!

    1. I'll definitely be starting another crochet attempt at some stage this year and I'll blog about it, so you'll all be able to see how it's going.

  6. Oh I think many frustrations of mine can definitely be traced to preferring in-person options. I, for one, think you can manage to up your knitting/crochet game. You certainly seem to stick with all your other endeavors, unlike me who has at least two cross-stitch projects barely started because I thought the pandemic would be a good time. Turns it, it wasn't. (Hey, maybe I can palm those off on my sister.) ;-)

    1. Sisters are very useful for some things! I have an unfinished cross stitch project so you're no the only one 😉

  7. The cyclamen is gorgeous. I like the idea of planning out adventures. I am still scared of my sewing machine so perhaps I can do the reverse of your challenges! And thank you for the photo challenges. It's adding a lot of fun to my life and I am very grateful.

    1. There are some things on my list which, although not obvious, will involve me facing up to some fears so very much like your own battle with the sewing machine. Good luck with that, by the way.

I'm glad you're enjoying the photo challenges and you've got it exactly right ... it's all about having fun.
