22/365: more raindrops

It's going to be another quiet day today. I'm starting to enjoy it and can feel myself slowing down ... in a good way I hasten to add, taking more time for the things I want to do rather than the things I think I need to do.

I've rearranged my next piano lesson. It should be on Wednesday morning but is now pushed back to Thursday because of the slight problem that there won't be a piano in the house for a Wednesday lesson! It occurred to me that the way I currently set up the laptop for the online piano lessons won't work with the new piano as there simply won't be enough room to the side for the small table the laptop sits on. I have a tablet stand that will solve the problem but, and it's a big but, my iPad won't charge. It is really old and I stopped using it some time ago because it was playing up but I was hoping it would be okay for the internet access during the 30 minute music lesson once a week. Obviously that won't work with the current iPad, so now I need to rethink. My friend is looking at the iPad to see if it's something easy to resolve but I think I will be looking for a replacement and just use my phone for now. I don't necessarily want to buy another iPad so any recommendations for other 10" tablets will be appreciated, please.

My knee is back to normal in terms of the swelling, but it's still hurting so I will continue to rest it as much as possible and also persevere in trying to arrange a doctor's appointment.

While I'm keeping the weight off my knee it seems as good a time as any to do some meal planning, so that's today's activity sorted. I haven't finalised any of the details yet but one of my 'adventures' will be a culinary one. We'd always planned that this was the time of life when we'd be doing a lot of travelling but of course that changed when Ced passed and again for me with the impact of the pandemic, but travelling is still something I want to do. I have no idea when it will be possible to travel abroad with any degree of confidence that the Covid risk is minimal so until then I plan to travel virtually. There are now lots of online tours to places I'd love to visit and I have the idea to support those with the cuisine of the countries I am 'visiting'. One week will be Indian/Sri Lankan, one week Chinese/Japanese, one week Middle East, and so on, dotted throughout the year but the food side of things will take a fair bit of planning as each time it will be an entire week's menu for every meal in the relevant cuisine. It'll be lots of new recipes to try out, which will be fun ... I'm starting with Indian/Sri Lankan as there is a new-to-me Sri Lankan restaurant in Bath which I'd love to visit or at least get a take-away meal before the city gets really crowded during the tourist season. I'll be starting by looking for authentic breakfast ideas.

  1. Glad to hear your knee is better. It must be really annoying not to be able to get an appointment to have it checked.

I like the idea of virtual tours until we can travel safely again.

    Enjoy your Saturday! :)

    1. Thanks Irune. I keep hoping the GP service will return to normal but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I did some virtual tours during the first UK lockdown and enjoyed them so hoping it will be as good this time.

Hope you have a good weekend too x

  2. Let's hope you can get your iPad sorted out. We did a trade in for our iPad Minis for the larger version but you don't get much discount and the new ones are so expensive. That's good your knee is not swollen but as it's still hurting it's good you are resting it. Your plan for the virtual travel and associated meals sounds an exciting one.

    1. I did consider trading mine in but I won't get much money for it and it may also be too old to qualify. I also looked at the cost of a refurbished one and that's almost the same price as buying new, which was a shock.

I'm hoping the knee will be back to normal by next week. It's a lot easier to move today but will continue with the resting.

I'm looking forward to my virtual holiday 😊

  3. Glad to hear that the knee swelling has gone down. Yes, do rest it as much as you can until you can get an appointment with your doctor, especially if it is hurting. I like your plans for virtual travels. :)

    1. Thanks Bless. The pain is starting to ease off so I don't think this is a serious problem. I'll continue to rest until the joint is back to normal which I don't think will be too long now.

The virtual travel should be fun. 😊

  4. Since you asked...

In India I recall having masala omelettes for breakfast. They were relatively small, unfolded (like a fritter I suppose) and eaten with bread - sort of torn up, placed piece by piece onto the bread and bitten off the slice. The bread was their version of Western bread. A dry white loaf - just leave a slice out overnight and that will come pretty close!
They also ate boiled eggs lightly tossed in some sort of spiced sauce. (Now I am writing this, I'm wondering whether you can even eat eggs.)
Big breakfast fave, specially in S. India, are dosas. Very yummy and come with various sauces. (High carb, though...)

Glad the knee is going in the right direction, and great news about the piano(s).

    1. Yes, I can eat eggs! Your comment has reminded me that I already have a couple of Indian breakfast recipes - spicy scrambled eggs with a dry spicy potato curry, and a stuffed paratha. The dosas sound like a good choice as well so they are on the list but not sure that I fancy the dry bread option! Many thanks for the suggestions.

  5. My friends have all reached the empty nest stage of life where they can go abroad whenever they wish. We care for our adult son, who has severe learning difficulties and autism, meaning exotic holidays are out of the question. I love your idea and am now feeling very inspired. Thank you. X

  6. Hi Eileen,
Your plans are beautiful and I hope you can make them happen!
There is always a way around obstacles and you have great ideas.
    I wish your knee well!
I liked the idea of virtual travel. I'll try too ;))!!!
Hugs and have a nice weekend.

    1. Thanks Ailime. I quite like trying a different angle to solve obstacles ... I've done a bit more juggling and have worked out how to buy a replacement tablet straight away, so problem is solved. Let me know where you travel to if you do decide to try the virtual option.

  7. Doesn't Kindle do some sort of 'pad' at a reasonable price?
I'm glad the swelling has gone down but the continued pain is not good. I do hope there's some easing soon.

    1. I think there is a reasonably priced Amazon tablet but it doesn't have good reviews for the camera. The favourite at the moment is a Microsoft Surface Go.

It's late on Sunday as I reply to this and the pain has gone, just the odd twinge if I move too quickly. Much better than it was 😊 xx

  8. That is a real nuisance about the Ipad. It sounds like there will have to be some logistics sorted out. Something DH told me was that if you go on Amazon to get a reconditioned tablet of whatever size and brand, get one that is supplied by Amazon. You can get some bargains that way, and if you get one that is supplied by Amazon, you have all their guarantees. You will have to read the small print, but it may be worth a shot. I believe there are some amazing bargains out there, if you are lucky.

    1. I think I've settled on a Microsoft Surface Go and will be borrowing a tablet until I can afford to buy it. I have looked at reconditioned tablets but I've never had much luck with reconditioned items so will give it a miss this time. Thanks for the advice though. I'll mention that to my friend as it may save him some money.

  9. Sorry to hear your iPad is giving you fits. I may soon be in the same boat, because my Android tablet works well enough for most things, there are starting to be apps that are not supported - I got 2 such messages just this week when trying to add things to it at my sister's house. It is pretty old, so I don't feel too bad if I need to replace it. But I will wait until I can no longer use the eBook reading apps before I do.

    1. At least my iPad is very old and I've had plenty of use from it. It's just a shame that it's happened so soon after I paid all the money out for the piano and before I've had time to top up my savings.

  10. I can't help with the ipad as I've never had one lol. Hope you get it sorted though.

I'm glad you're able to continue with your culinary adventures. Perhaps if/when you can travel you could visit some local places? Sometimes - especially if the weather cooperates - it's nice just to get out and have a look around. During the last couple of Covid years we've learned of some lovely places local to us that we haven't explored before. Of course, when most things were shut, a lot of people were exploring locally but as things have opened up I find less people out about us.

    1. No worries, I think I've decided on a replacement tablet.

I do plan to do some exploring locally but it's not ideal weather for that at the moment. One thing on the list is to get to really know some of the local nature parks which I've tended to ignore up to now.
