Garage Door, Freezer, and Diary Dates!

removing the old garage door

The garage door company was scheduled to arrive at 10 am but they were late ... late enough to mean that I couldn't go to the monthly U3A book group meeting. Still, it's done now and that the first thing to tick off my 2023 to-do list. The finished result looks good. It's supposed to be an exact match of the one that was removed but the handle and lock on the new door is much lower, which I knew about, and I actually find this new configuration much easier to use. I now have to move everything back to the correct position in the garage but that's dependent on when S will be able to move the two heavy items for me ... they have to be moved before I can tackle the rest.

So on to the next thing on the to-do list. I was going to replace the oven next but the issues with the garage freezer means that it has jumped to the top of the list. I need to have confidence that it is reliable and I no longer have that ... it was off again for part of the morning and then just restarted itself. There's not much food in it at the moment so this would be the ideal time to swap things over. There's a Beko model in my price range that states it's suitable for use in an unheated external building and will function correctly down to -15ºc so it should be fine for my needs. It's an upright and is about the same capacity as the one it'll replace, so all I need to do is get it ordered.

My diary is filling up, not with firm dates at the moment but with promises for more social activities in the coming month. First there is a new Meetup group for board games which I've joined but haven't been to one of the meetings yet. This group meets one evening a month in Bradford-on-Avon to play modern board games, none of which I've ever played but I do miss playing board games and I've been assured that they are really easy to learn. It's worth a try anyway.

Local possibilities for photography looks more promising this year. I've already mentioned that I am hoping to start a photography group with the U3A meeting once a month, and yesterday Joy contacted me to suggest that we meet for our own photography sessions followed by cake (actually I think she said a tea/coffee but 😀🍰🧁) ... we used to do some years ago and it was always good fun. H also wants to do something similar as well, so if they all work out that is a minimum of three photography outings a month with other people to add to the dairy in addition to the times I go out on my own. There is a possibility of a fourth one with E but that still has to be discussed and I'm not sure that it will be a regular event, more a series of one-offs. It looks like 2023 will be a very good year!

  1. Wow, look at you checking off items on your to do list! I'm sorry you had to miss the book group, but, at least the new garage door has been installed and I hope it will work well without giving you any problem for many years. Lots of social activity in your future, too, which has to be good. I'm still huddled at home, so I will read what you've been doing and enjoy it.

    1. It does feel good to tick off the first thing for the year. I'm not to disappointed about the book group as I hadn't read this month's book ... things went wrong with loans of books and I didn't get my copy in time. The garage door was more important anyway.

Hopefully the social plans will work out ... fingers crossed! xx

  2. A shame you had to miss the book group but workmen are really not good with their time keeping promises I have found. Your garage door is fitted now and once your items are back in place you can breathe a sigh of relief. Does sound like replacing the freezer is a priority, it's one of those things that needs to be reliable. You have got plenty planned for this New Year and all sounds exciting.

    1. At least it's done now. I'll see everybody from the U3A today at the monthly meeting so am not too worried about the book group.

We're moving the stuff back in the garage at the weekend so won't be long until it's nice and tidy again. Then I will sort out the freezer problem ...an unplanned expense but unavoidable.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the social plans work out. xx

  3. Glad the garage door has been sorted. Too bad about the garage's freezer but as you say if if had to break down better slightly empty. Your photography group sounds like it will be a good fit for you & friends. How did last year's group photography project end up - of did I miss a weekend post about it?

    1. Thanks Mary-Lou. At least the freezer has gone while there are sales on!

Last year's project with H and Co died a death. Her two friends were very half-hearted about it so I gave up on it. This year we're just going to do some photo session together, but nothing formal in the way of a project. xx

  4. I love board games too, my husband only plays cards or dice with me ( which i am grateful for!) I play scrabble on my own.

    1. The one downside to living alone is not having anyone to play board games with, not that my late partner was that keen. I play Scrabble online sometimes but much prefer playing as part of a group. xx

    2. A couple of times now my sister has given me board games for Christmas! I mean, I quite enjoy them but who does she think I am going to play with? I am trying to screw up the courage to suggest she takes this year's back - if it isn't too late. I'd hate to offend her but it is such a waste of money as it is only going to sit untouched in the cupboard with the others...

    3. I feel for you. I have the same issue, i.e. gifts like that from people who know my likes and interests but haven't considered my lifestyle. Good luck getting it sorted xx

  5. I'm sorry I missed this yesterday. I overslept, was short of morning time and just forgot to catch up later. It's great that the garage door is now sorted and I agree about the freezer - you do need to have confidence in it. xx

  6. So glad the door is done - what a relief. Pain about the freezer. Been there!

    1. It is a relief. The freezer is due at the weekend. I'll be glad to get it done and at least it's a sale price so slightly cheaper. xx

  7. I am sure you will appreciate that new door many many times. Good luck with getting the freezer in. Question: Will you then feel like you need to do lots more cooking ahead to fill it up?

    1. It's made things so much easier having an up and over door that works properly. The freezer has also been replaced and is in position. I will do a bit more batch cooking but mostly want to fill up with the components to make meals rather than home-cooked ready meals.
