A Quiet Day with a Hospital Appointment Thrown In for Luck!

a few more books from my sister
(took the photo just as they started to toppled over!)

Thursday is one of the days when I don't have anything planned so it'll be, for the most part, a quiet sort of day spent relaxing at home. I have my usual practices to do, Italian and piano, and then I'll stick my nose in a book and lose myself for a while. I'm reading 'This is the Night They Come for You' by Robert Goddard which was the December book for the book group - the sharing of books didn't quite go to plan and I didn't get my copy in time to read it before the meeting, but as I couldn't make it to the meeting it didn't really matter.

Unusually, today I do have a late afternoon appointment which is a call back to the retina clinic at the hospital in Bath. I'll have drops in my eyes and won't be able to drive afterwards so have arranged for assistance from the local Link Transport and will be driven by a kind gentleman called Peter who will pick me up from home at 3:15pm, will wait at the hospital as long as necessary and then bring me back home. It's a brilliant service and you are just asked to make a donation to costs. I've never had an appointment at that time so I'm hoping that the clinics won't be running too late. The appointment letter from the hospital contains strict Covid restrictions again, i.e. don't try to enter the department until a couple of minutes before my appointment time, and I can't wait in the waiting room if they are running late so may be given a pager so they can ask me to return to the department when the doctor is ready to see me. I don't know if this is an indication of the numbers of Covid cases in the hospital or whether it is related to staffing levels and the strikes.

And finally, changing the subject completely, I have chosen my One Little Word for 2023. Actually it's three words this time ... the Three Cs: contentment, consistency and confidence ... and the credit for these goes to Joy who mentioned that they will be her focus for the year. They clicked for me more than any other word I've been considering and Joy confirmed that she didn't mind me copying her, so these words are the focus for my year too.

  1. I like your Three Cs words for the year. The book The Dictionary of Lost Words has an intriguing title, I wonder what it is about.

    1. I can't take credit for the three Cs words, that's all down to Joy, but I think focusing on them will make a huge difference to what I achieve this year.

  2. That's odd, I tried to comment yesterday, but couldn't, so I texted you a few ideas for possible names for your U3A photo group.

    1. Sorry Joy, I've just look and can see your text. I didn't get a notification of a new message from you. I like 'take your pic'. xx

  3. Nice selection of books. I do the same with my Sister when I see her which means I never run out of reading material and we never seem to buy the same books which is good. Hope your hospital appt goes well, eldest Daughter works in a hospital and is back wearing a mask, I think all hospitals have seen a rise in covid cases so are back to being cautious.

    1. Sisters are useful sometimes aren't they! We both have the same tastes which is good. The hospital appointment was good and I now know I will continue to be monitored every six months. I checked the lasted Covis numbers ... it's quite scary again, isn't it? xx

  4. I hope your appointment at the eye clinic goes well. That's good that you will have hospital transport and what a great service. Husband used it once before and the the drivers are volunteers which is marvellous. I think Covid cases are on the rise, I just told Bless how back in 2020 I was screened entering the radiotherapy department and tested positive but my treatment went ahead with strict precautions in place so don't worry. Those three Cs are good words for the year.

    1. Thanks Eileen, everything is fine and I will now been seen every six months. The Link Transport is a life saver. I don't know how I'd manage to get home without that support. Covid cases are definitely on the rise again and numbers are much higher than I expected. It's not often on the news now so we've been lulled into a false sense of security which I suppose is what the government wants. xx

  5. I do like your words for the year, particularly "consistent", it is something I could improve. Good luck with your appointment this afternoon. Helen S.

    1. I think 'consistent' will be my main focus as that's my weakest area on certain parts of life that will certainly benefit from some consistent effort on my part! The hospital appointment was good and they will continue to monitor things in the future, so a good outcome. xx

  6. Great words to use as a filter of focus for the year - if you take the 3 C's they form a sort of clover leaf & that IMO is a good thing. Good luck with the appt - sending lots of positive energy.

    1. Maybe I need to think of a fourth word so it forms a four-leaved clover ... that would be really lucky!

The appointment was fine thanks. Nothing to worry about and I'll be checked again in six months time. xx

  7. I'm late commenting! I hope your eye appointment went well and how nice to have a ride there and back! That's the sort of volunteering I wanted to do after I retired, to give rides to cancer patients going for their chemo and hydration treatments, but, of course, I only did the preliminary inquiries and then, Covid happened and any thoughts of giving rides to people stopped!
I like your words for the year! They complement one another. :)

    1. And I'm even later responding to you late comment!

Yes the appointment went well and I'll be checked again in 6 months time. The volunteer transport is a brilliant system and a much needed service. I was talking to my driver yesterday and he was saying that it is much more than just transport to hospitals and includes things like collecting shopping for people who are house-bound. My car isn't big enough to do anything that involves taking passengers anywhere but I could do the shopping, so am thinking about it. It's a shame you weren't able to do your own volunteer driving but hopefully things will improve enough in time that you can consider it again.

It's a good choice of words isn't it ... all credit to Joy. xx

  8. I like your three C's, and it seems to be that you are already pretty consistent, so wishing you loads of the other 2 as well.

    1. That surprises me as I feel that consistency is the one thing I need to really work in. I'm currently reasonably consistent with activities and tasks I like but really poor when it comes to everything else where a consistent approach would improve life considerably. xx
