Thursday
One mammoth sorting session later and the stack of music books in the bigger of the two cupboards has gone from this ...
via this ...
to this ...
I've been ruthless and just kept the books I know I'll use. The bottom shelf holds all the piano pieces on the left and the piano tutor books on the right - most of these were given to me and will be used during the initial lessons at least. On the shelf above the piano music are some general theory books for Miss C on the left and the music for my principal instrument, the tenor horn, on the right. On the shelf above that is the black folder used during choir performances on the left, and the hymn books etc. on the right. I still have to look through the top two shelves. They're currently used to store mutes for the brass instruments and various accessories, some of which will go when I sell the instruments.
Of course the rest of the books are still in the house but they have been sorted into piles ready for disposal. There is a pile of books to be sold with the respective instrument, so cornet, flute, clarinet, and saxophone, and I also have some more tutor books for the young lad in the Close who's learning the cornet at school. I'll wait to place the adverts until the schools go back in September as that's the time people will be looking to buy instruments. Finally I have a pile of ensemble arrangements and a pile of recorder music. I may approach the library service to see if the performing arts library in Devizes is interested in the more difficult arrangements and one of the primary schools to see if they want the recorder music. If there's no interest, I will donate it to Oxfam as they will sell it in their specialist music shops.
Today will be similar to yesterday but with an online Indian cookery class thrown in the mix. I'm concentrating on the playroom room today - some decluttering, a lot of sorting and re-organising as my last attempt to rearrange the room hasn't worked out too well. I have a short list of phone calls to make and I also want to look for a better broadband provider as the current one isn't that reliable with my internet access continually dropping out throughout the day. It's been bugging me for a while but I now need to get it sorted before the piano lessons start.
*************************
- 1st = a set of plastic measuring spoons (I never use them)
- 2nd = a white shirt (band uniform that is now too big)
- 3rd = odd balls of wool (going to my sister, who can make use of them)
- 4th = a map quiz book (completed and unlikely to want to do it again)
- 5th = blue cardigan (big holes in both elbows so only fit for the bin!)
- 6th = a pile of half completed puzzle books (going to my friend's sister)
- 7th = large fruit bowl (I don't like it but K does, so it's going to her!)
- 8th = a broken Filofax cover (only fit for the bin!)
- 9th = unopened toiletries (unwanted gifts, so going to a friend)
- 10th = 3 small terracotta indoor pots (gifting them to K)
- 11th = old duvet set (to be donated)
- 12th = 5 Pyrex divided containers (to be donated as I never use them)
Well done - that's a huge difference!

Thanks Joy. I had a couple of enquiries about private lessons this week so that spurred me on to remove the unwanted books. Once they are out of the house I won't feel tempted. It does feel good to only have the music I want to play on the shelves.
DeleteYou've made a huge difference and you are well organised now. You've inspired me to sort out my dining room area and buy a new bookcase.
ReplyDeleteThis decluttering lark is contagious! Have you chosen your bookcase yet?
DeleteI'm still looking online for the perfect bookcase but I have made a good start on the sorting out.
DeleteTaking your time choosing is all part of the fun. Well done on the decluttering so far.
DeleteWow! You did a lot of decluttering of the music! Well done! You're inspiring me!
ReplyDeleteOnce I decided to sell off some of the instruments the music clearing was much easier. I've only kept piano and tenor horn music, though I am still dithering about the flute as I enjoy playing that. All the rest, plus the music I used for school bands and recorder groups is going. Glad to hear it's inspiring you ☺️
DeleteThat's a huge difference! Well done Eileen.
ReplyDeleteI sorted out my tights drawer! I don't wear tights anymore, only the very thick opaque ones so the rest went in the bin. I had a drawerful of black knee high socks which made their way into the bin. They must have been in the drawer for about twelve years! This decluttering is contagious!
Thanks Carole. Yes, decluttering can be contagious and well done on your efforts. I'm looking through all my clothes next week so hope I do as well as you.
DeleteWhat a difference your decluttering on made on your cupboard (good photo for SPSH). Let's hope that the interest in the instruments soars immediately so you can have this task truly completed & some money in your pocket.
ReplyDeleteIt feels good to have it done, well partly done. The instruments bundled together with a big stack of books should sell easily next month once the instrumental teachers open their lists for new pupils.
DeleteI did think about the reorganised cupboard for my SPSH photo but will re-do the photo once I have bought some more white storage boxes and organised all the bits and bobs.
Hi Eileen,
ReplyDeleteI really admire you for the methods you use in organizing your things!
Slowly go far, says a Portuguese proverb.
My congratulations for all this effort that has culminated in success.
Hugs,
Ailime
Thanks Ailime. I thought that dealing with all the music was going to be much harder than it actually turned out to be, and I'm enjoying how easy it is to find a particular book amongst the few I've decided to keep.
