49/365: the pieris is flowering

Yesterday was another sociable day. J brought her granddaughter over for the morning, arriving much earlier than I expected but it was good to see them both and to catch up on what's been happening in both our lives. I think it will become a regular thing, maybe a couple of times a month although we haven't arranged any specific dates yet - J doesn't plan like that!

They left in time for me to get some lunch and then settle down to watch the Indian cookery class ... veggie pakoras, which I will try when I have some odds and ends of veg to use up.

I spent the rest of the afternoon playing the piano, starting by playing over old pieces and making a start on 'Star' from my Les Mis book, and the rest of the time practicing the grade 1 pieces.

Today will be much the same. It's the nutrition focus, discussing the benefits of 'rainbow eating', and then I'm meeting the other J for lunch which will probably take up most of the afternoon but .... it does depend on the weather situation as we've been promised a visit from Storm Eunice and if it's too bad I will be staying indoors, keeping safe and warm. We're about 30 miles outside of the area covered by the Red weather warning, so have the same Amber warning as the rest of the country .... just hoping that Eunice knows that!

  1. It's pretty gusty round here at the moment but nothing 'dangerous' so fingers crossed.

  2. Our weather warning has been upgraded to red overnight. It's already getting up a very loud wind.

  3. It seems that Old Man Winter is making himself known every where! A test for the new fence!?!?! Hopefully you learn lots about rainbow eating, it's one of my favourite ways to cook ... happy weekend.

    1. The fence is standing up to the winds so far ... I honestly don't think the old one would have!

I try to eat the rainbow as much as I can but it's not easy when cooking for one. I picked up some good tips which I'll try to include in my diet though, starting with drinking some tomato juice at least four times a week as studies have shown how this helps metabolic syndrome for people like me. This was the study we discussed ... https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jnme/2019/2125070/

  4. Very windy here but living on the coast I was more worried about the flood warning. I signed up to Natural Resources Wales who have just telephoned with the message to say our flood warning is no longer in force which is a big relief. You had your new fence erected just in time for Storm Eunice.

    1. The other end of the village is prone to flooding but it's much higher where I live, so no reason to worry thankfully. It's good news that your flood warning is no longer in force. Are you very close to the sea?

The fence has stood up to the wind really well. It's very sturdy and didn't show any signs of movement at all 😀

    2. I live in a coastal town but not close to the promenade thankfully. I have seen flooding here before but the sea water didn't reach my home. It flooded the supermarket and many homes and damaged caravans though. It's good that your fence is strong and sturdy and it will last for many years now.

    3. That's a relief. My friend used to live in a house that flooded every winter when the river broke its banks and the damage it left behind when the waters receded was heart-breaking.

The fence has definitely passed it's weather test!

    1. Oh, thanks Lyssa. I decided against going out so have stayed safe and warm at home. The storm has raged outside but there's no damage to my home and the worst is over now.xx

  6. I hope the storm didn't hit too badly. We were on a red warning here so I postponed my work. There were too many trees coming down in the area for my liking. Arilx

    1. It's passed over now and there's no damage to my home or garden. A building in town has lost part of it's roof and some traffic lights have been blown over but that's all I know so far. I think we've been lucky.

I cancelled meeting with my friend and stayed at home. Glad to hear that you stayed safe xx

  7. I'm late with my comments, but, glad to read that you decided to stay home and the storm has abated now and caused no damage to your home or the new fence! I watched some of the coverage on BBC News and was concerned for my British blog friends. Hope you have a lovely weekend, Eileen. :)

    1. Thanks Bless. It's still very windy today but nowhere near as bad as yesterday. The storm was no match at all for the new fence 😂

Some of the news reports from around the country were horrendous so I think we got off lightly in this area. Lots of reports of fallen trees and damaged houses and shops, and a church in Wells, about 30 miles away, lost the top of it's tower but luckily there was nobody in the churchyards when it fell to the ground. There are no reports of deaths in this area yet but there have been about nine deaths altogether I think.

Hope you have a lovely weekend too, Bless x
