Tuesday
Yesterday's course was all about balanced diets, so a recap of information from previous sessions but with a bit of additional detail. The part I found most interesting was the sugar content in readymade sauces, not that it affects me as I make my own from scratch - a 500gm jar of Dolmio Bolognese sauce contains about 7 teaspoons of sugar - but it has encouraged me to keep on with the bulk cooking! Another point was the fact that some low sugar/diet options actually contain much more sugar than the advertising suggests.
We have to set a new goal related in some way to balanced meals but I haven't decided what I will do yet. Part of the session was a brief overview of the traffic light system on food labels so I could do something related to that.
Today will be a quiet day. There is nothing in the diary and I'm pretty much on top of the housework and admin, so I can please myself. I'll do the usual Italian practice and piano practice but apart from that it'll be whatever takes my fancy.
Wow that's shocking to learn there is so much sugar in the Dolmio sauce and I wouldn't use that. Absolutely right about some diet options, yogurts for example that say ten percent less sugar could still contain high amounts of sugar. A part of hubby's diabetes course was studying the traffic light system and working out what they mean, you have to be so careful. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteThe things we learned yesterday made me so glad that I am able to cook properly and don't need to rely on ready meals. I've started looking at all the labelling of the cupboard supplies this morning to see whether I need to make changes ... that's my next goal.
DeleteIt's shocking quite how much sugar sauces have. They reduce the salt and add something else just as unhealthy to keep the flavour. Definitely a reason for making from scratch.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to be on top of housework and admin - have a lovely, conscience clear day!
xx
I think my sister and myself inherited Mum's attitude to buying readymade sauces. Mum was a Cook (professionally) and was quite vocal about using readymade anything so we grew up learning how to cook. I can remember the guilt I felt the only time I ever used gravy granules instead of making it properly 😂😂
DeleteTrying to eat a balanced diet is something I am so interested in. I am forever reading food labels! Hope you have a lovely day. x
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely getting a better idea of what constitutes a balanced diet though interestingly, and somewhat confusingly, the diabetes prevention leader and the nutritionist, give out contradictory information!
DeleteYeah to another successful online learning. I know that many low fat options increase the level of sugar to still appeal to our tastebuds. In my online workshop "Craving Change" a lot of the foods ramp up sugars when fat is lowered or in the reverse ... this lead me to the workshop of "Reading Nutritional Facts on Labels". (lol). I hope you enjoy your free day. :)
ReplyDeleteThankfully, I don't buy much in the way of processed foods so it's relatively easy for me to sort out my usuals. The whole food labelling thing seems to be a minefield.
DeleteAll too often, cooking from scratch is the way to go, with things like prepared condiments used in moderation. I hope you are enjoying a lovely, relaxed day.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right. At least I'm at a stage of life where I have the time to do that. I've had a great day thanks, and I hope the same for you too.
DeleteI'm guilty of buying the jarred sauces, but I look at ingredients trying to choose the least sugar/salt-filled option. I tried cooking sauce from scratch in the beginning, but it wasn't sweet enough to to my family and I wasn't going to bother if I was going to have to add sugar anyway lol
ReplyDeleteIt does seem a waste of your effort if you have to add sugar anyway. 😂
