116/365: here come the alliums!

Almost the whole of yesterday was taken up with the tax office query and it's still not sorted out. It was mostly an exercise in time wasting as I was being continually transferred to the 'correct person to handle my query' and waiting in queues as a result, but absolutely no luck speaking to someone who was prepared to investigate properly.  All I can do is try again today!

So, it looks like another day at home. The tax issue is the priority for today but I don't intend to spend too much time on the phone to them and will resort to writing if I can't get a sensible answer out of them. Then it's a toss up between taking the photos for H's challenge or continuing with sorting out in the garage. To be honest, I think the garage will win, especially if neighbour S is around and has time to move some of the heavier bits around for me.

  1. Isn't it frustrating dealing with the tax office and all the while they're raking in too much tax from people who can ill afford it. I expect my tax problems are similar to yours in that my hubby reached state pension age last year too. Better luck today, my fingers are crossed for you.

    1. Thanks Eileen. Yes, that's part of the problem but also that they have added a mystery 6 figure income on top of my correct income ... I wish I had that much money coming in but sadly I don't. It's being investigated so I now need to wait to see whether they sort it out properly.

  2. Do you have a Personal Tax Account on the HMRC website Eileen? If not, it's fairly straightforward to set up if you have a passport for ID purposes, probably a bit harder if you don't. I did mine last year to check my state pension forecast. There's also a section for tax codes and you can correct their income forecast and tell them why you think the code is wrong.

    1. I already have a Personal Tax Account but unfortunately my problem can't be sorted that way. The mystery income they have added on top of my correct income can't be amended in the same way that my correct income could be amended if a correction was needed. I've spoken to a lovely lady today who is going to investigate it for me and hopefully will sort it out.

  3. Sending all good vibes. I suggest that you make a note of all the names, and see if you can get them to email with any confirmations for a 'paper' trail. Sometimes you really have to chip away.

    1. Thanks Lyssa. Don't worry, I've kept a note of all the people I've spoken to. I eventually got some help today and the problem is being investigated but if I don't get a satisfactory answer I will escalate to a manger.

  4. What an absolute nuisance for you, Eileen. A waste of time but has to be done. My experience is that wrong codes do sort themselves out and one gets a rebate in does course (it never seems to be too low, always too high) but that's not always practical, is it?

    1. I have a feeling that they have somehow linked another person's income with mine so an extra source of income amounting to a 6 figure amount has been added to mine. It's so completely wrong! I spoke to someone today who is going to investigate so hopefully it will be resolved quickly.

  6. How annoying, it appears a number of people have had problems with the Tax office at the moment and always in their advantage not ours. Hope you get it sorted to-day. Helen S.

  7. I like Amanda's suggestion although I know nothing about your tax system in England. April 30th is the end of our tax year & we thankfully can file ahead of that date. I agree, that some of these government offices put horrible waiting music on just to deter people's determination to speak to a person. I wonder how many government offices will use the pandemic as a reason for incorrect info & messes?? Given the choice of government issues vs garage issues, I'd take the garage (col).

    1. I already have the Personal Tax Account that Amanda is referring to but I can't use it to amend the figure that's wrong. I managed to speak to someone today who is going to investigate and get back to me. I think the pandemic will continue the be the reason given for messes etc, for quite a few years! I made good progress on the garage though.

  8. Hi Eileen,
    How are you?
These matters both over the phone and in person are always difficult to handle! Bureaucracy is too much!
I want your neighbor to help you with the garage work.
Gorgeous photo of alium almost blooming!
Have a beautiful day and week.
    Hugs,
    Ailime

  9. Oh no - sounds like quite the mess. I hate it when you are passed from one person to another and no one seems to want to help. Love the photo!
