192/365: the 'white' rose, the next stage on from the flower I photographed yesterday

The weekend didn't quite go according to plan but was still good and I did get to watch the tennis on both days so I'm not complaining. I'd planned to do some clearing and did make a start, delivering a selection of items to friends on Saturday. I was just about to load the car with the stuff for the charity shop and the recycling yard but stopped to talk to neighbour S. He had a pressie for me ... a load of butyl liner that was being thrown out either where he works or where one of his friends works but which will be perfect to line the new wooden planters and which has saved me some money.

He'd spent the previous day installing some IKEA cabinets for his daughter and I commented on how much money he'd saved her as that's exactly what I'm planning for the dining room and have been quoted an astronomical amount for installation. Well ... you've guessed it ... S will install them for me when I'm ready to buy them. I need to work out when I can afford to make a start as the heating work has to take priority but there is also the issue that IKEA has problems with supply and have announced that once existing supplies are exhausted they don't know when the new stock will arrive.

We actually chatted for ages so I was going to get lunch and finish off the clearing afterwards ... too hot and the heat was getting to me. Unfortunately when I went to close the up and over garage door it twisted and jammed. After a struggle S was able to get it closed and locked so it is secure for now but it's new door time, something I haven't budgeted for so it will be added to the list. The important thing is that the garage is secure but I will only have access through the side door until I get the up and over door replaced. I'm playing with my finances today to work out what I can afford to do and when, and I need to check whether the garage door replacement will be covered by my house insurance.

After that I gave up on the clearing ... it would have meant clearing a path through from the front of the garage to the side door and it wasn't worth the effort in that heat so it can all stay where it is until the door is replaced. I enjoyed all of the tennis but especially the men's doubles final which was a really hard fought match and great to watch even though the pair I was routing for didn't win.

Today's highlight is meeting with A for a game or two of Scrabble. This is the 'A' I met at the Ladies That Lunch meal and I'm off to her house this afternoon for the first time so am keeping my fingers crossed that it goes well. Apart from that I have a couple of loads of washing, but that should dry quickly in this heat, and I need to make a start of clearing access to all the radiators in the house ready for when M (the boiler man) is ready to start. I haven't heard back from him yet but that usually means he's on holiday so I can take my time to get everything ready for him.

  1. What a very lovely neighbour you have. Bless him.
How annoying about the garage door - if it's not one thing, it's another. I hope it's not too costly to either repair or replace.
    Enjoy your scrabble. xx

    1. He's great, a very kind man. The garage door definitely has to be replaced and will cost about £700. That's the amount shown on the website of a local company specialising in replacement doors but I haven't gone as far as getting a quote yet. xx

    1. He is so kind, a lovely man.

I haven't played Scrabble for ages and am looking forward to playing again. I'll let you know how it goes.

  3. Our up and over garage door did the same, we called a man in and he fixed it, much cheaper than a new door, it now works better than ever. Just a thought.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion but I think it's definitely a replacement. The door was damaged anyway by the previous owner who reversed into it and it's always been difficult to open and close because of that. Two parts have sheared off this time, one leaving a hole where it had rusted, so it would be a case of spending money for repair on a door that is past it's best. S, and also neighbour J, both think it's beyond saving.

  4. The weekend might not have gone quite according to plan, but, it sounds like you were still able to have a good weekend. How nice of S to bring you the liners, help with the garage door, and offering to help install the cabinets for you, when you get them! Kind and helpful neighbors make such a difference, don't they?
I love how your white rose goes through all those color changes, first! Definitely an attention getter! :D
Hope you enjoy your scrabble game with A. :)

    1. He's the best. It'll save me a fortune if he installs the dining room cupboards for me and it means I can probably afford to do the work next month instead of next January.

I did a blog post on that rose which you may like ... http://in-my-playroom.blogspot.com/2020/06/5-in-5-rambling-rose.html

I'm hoping we are fairly evenly matched with the Scrabble but if should be fun regardless.

  5. The problem with the garage door is hard. I suppose it means some juggling, but at least it is secure at the moment. Good luck with the IKEA cabinets, and I hope that you had fun with the Scrabble.

    1. I am very relieved that the garage is at least secure so I can just forget about it for now. I've I've worked out my finances correctly I will be able to order the new cabinets at the end of the month. The Scrabble with A was good fun and we'll be doing it again.

  6. Neighbor S is truly a blessing, isn't he. I started catching up on your posts on Saturday, so I have been speed reading backwards to see what you would be doing in the dining room. It sounds like quite a makeover - do share pics. I hope it all goes well, and that the garage door can be fixed quickly too.

    1. He is brilliant. Thanks to his generosity in spending time to help me for free I am well ahead on my master plan to sort out the house and garden.

The dining room improvement is all about adding extra, much needed storage. There will be pictures!
